Where will Shohei Ohtani end up?

It's a shame that his injury will likely lower his market value... but he's gonna rake in YUGE bucks all the same.

But where will he end up?

Ohtani has previously said that one of the biggest reasons he chose the Angels was because he wanted to play for a west coast team so he would have a shorter plane ride back to Japan.
I see no reason why that still wouldn't be a factor in his thinking.
I think the farthest east he'll go is the Rangers... but I fully expect he'll sign with a west coast team again.
But which one?

The Dodgers?
They're a rich team who like to ignore the Luxury Tax... but honestly, I don't think Ohtani wants that kind of environment.

The Padres?
They went all in last year, spent boatloads of money... and didn't make the playoffs.
I think Ohtani will be gun-shy on the Padres.

The Diamondbacks?
Where the D-Backs a one-hit-wonder? Ohtani will sure be wondering.

The Giants?
I give this a 50/50 chance. They have been snake bit since their glory days but they have a good process in place. The big question is, do the Giants have the balls to spend that kind of money?

The Athletics?

The Angels?
It would have to be the sales pitch of the century!!!!!!! (he already turned down their qualifying offer)

The Mariners?
This is my pick for where he goes.
Ohtani is on record saying how much he likes Seattle and the Mariners are sooooooo close!
I think the Mariners open up their wallet and go after Ohtani.

Siedler left his entire fortune to Ohtani, including his stake in the team. They will be announcing it tomorrow.

I'd say 75% chance Dodgers. They held back on spending last year to avoid the luxury tax.

25% chance the Giants. They need to make a big move.

0% Mariners. They won't/can't spend that much.

It is true, the Mariners ownership refuse to pay large sums for really anything, and it does not help that there is a question mark on his health.

But, I would love him in Seattle.

Yeah, it's more like wishful thinking on my part...
But then again, no one thought the Rangers would go out and spend $500 million dollars either.

I am sure you have already heard this, but before I forget again.

The Rangers were known for one thing in this year's playoffs and that was their ROAD wins. I think they were undefeated (11-0?) on the road in playoff games. Who did they play?

R ays
O rioles
A stros
D iamondbacks

Coincidence? I don't think so.

California is a high tax shit hole. if he had any brains, he'd steer clear of that state.

Well, if he eliminates all the shit holes... then I guess his only choice would be the Toronto Blue Jays.

I figured he would stay on the west coast.

But the Dodgers puking up $700 million is just fucking ridiculous.

Seriously. WTF? $20 million against the luxury tax for 10 years of the "best player since Ruth"? Fucking Dodgers need all the help they can get but subverting the luxury tax like this should not be allowed.

Obviously Ohtani will be part of the next ownership group. Only way this contract makes sense for the team.

The Dodgers, Yankees, and Mets are on line 1.

That deal looks like they gave the salary cap rules to an 8 year old and told them to figure out a way to make this contract work for the next 10 years.

Either that or it's a stroke of genius.
All depends on how you look at it, I guess.

If the Dodgers win 2-3 World Series rings, it's probably all worth it.

Of the $700M in the contract, only $460M counts against the CBT(Competitive Balance Tax). I don't understand why this is so.
