UJR Hobbies?
Ok, who was it that collected old cast iron cookware? I had a couple old as hell cast iron skillets come in, a griswold and a pre griswold "erie".
Homebrew, what's in your fermentors right now? I have some hard cider with ginger in a couple gallon jugs, I'm going to add some oak chips to one and let it age and I have to buy some watermelon juice to put in my watermelon wine now that I murdered the yeast.
Who, how many terrabytes is your porn collection now?
DT, how's the knife business going?
ER, are you going to go back to raising rabbits and chickens?
Wut, how's your black sock collection going?
Fill in the spreadsheet people. What is everyone else's hobbies?

Sadly the carboys are empty for now. I picked up a 1938 Chevy truck a while back and my extra money and time are being used on it.

Seemed like a good idea at the time. It's a little hot tasting, that's why I'm going to add the juice. Thinking it's up around 15%.

That ABV isn't to bad, but the "hot" taste may be coming from a higher level of methanol (instead of ethanol) than you were expecting due to the fruit you were using. Stuff could give you a helluva hangover.

I draw, sculpt modeling clay, collect coins, comics, and spoons, build legos. I also like to repair old things and build shit as needed around the house.

Likely, I need to figure out how to offset that.Homebrew wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 12:32 amThat ABV isn't to bad, but the "hot" taste may be coming from a higher level of methanol (instead of ethanol) than you were expecting due to the fruit you were using. Stuff could give you a helluva hangover.

I like hitting up the local flea markets, mostly looking for vintage cast iron. I lke cleaning them up and restoring them to useful status.
Been experimenting with dry-aging beef over the last year. Fairly easy to do and the results are great.
Always trying different recipes/cooking stuff. Been playing around with sous-vide cooking the last six months. Really get some good results from that.
And like everyone else, drinking, masturbating and porn.

Mostly just keeping an eye on a bunch of asshole posters on a little shithole social forum.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

What do you do to strip them down? The griswold and Erie plans I found have some serious buildup on the sides I can't scrub off.nerd_alert wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:19 am Varous things...

Given a few pieces to my sister, sold one or two. Not really a hard core collector. Part of it is the fun of finding a more rare or uncommon piece of iron. Also, I get some satisfaction of bringing an old, cruddy, rusty piece to life. Many of the pieces I have are 80-100 years old. Think of all the meals the moms & grandmoms cooked in those.VinceBordenIII wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 3:23 pmWhat do you do with it after you restore it?nerd_alert wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:19 am Varous things...

I do a combination of things. I start the pieces off in a plastic tub filled with lye (drain cleaner). How long will depend on the amount of crud and the temperature. Lye is more reactive the hotter it is. So summer is the optimal time to use it. Once the crud is off, if there is no rust, just wash it clean and then re-season. If there is rust, I use an electrolosys tub.Blast wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 6:14 pmWhat do you do to strip them down? I have a small one that was my mom's when she was a child. My wife left it on the stove and burned off the seasoning.nerd_alert wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:08 pm

As far as imagining, that's what I do with my military stuff. Where was this Death's Head insignia, or this helmet? Who wore it? Did they die? Were they captured by the Russians, or were they lucky enough to make it to the West? Have a German helmet from the gates of Moscow.

Still making knives, just slowed down as I was getting burned out.
Started making epoxy resin river tables recently.
I now understand while they sell for big bucks.

Re: UJR Hobbies?
If its just light rust I use a vinegar/water mix to remove it. I do the yellow easy off too for crusty shit, just spray it until its covered in foam and stick it in a garbage bag for 3-4 day, scrub with a SS brush, and repeat. I never got to set up an electrolysis tank (had plenty of experience with that building hydrogen generators). I finally stopped unless its something really unusual or rare I want or can flip. I have probably 500 lbs of cast iron now, and nowhere to put more.nerd_alert wrote: ↑Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:17 pmI do a combination of things.
