An easy math problem

#1

Post by QillerDaemon »

A square of side length x has an inscribed triangle with lengths 3, 4, and 5. The corners of the triangle touch the sides of the square. What is the length of x?

You have five minutes to solve for x.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

The corners of the triangle touch the SIDES of the square, or the corners of it?

Two hints:

1- the triangle having sides lengths of 3, 4, and 5 means something.

2- from clue 1, this means there could be a similar triangle.

The corners of the triangle all touch the square in some fashion. That's what inscribed means.

This is correct.
16 over the square root of 17.

x-y/3 = x/4

4(x-y) = 3x

4x-3x = 4y

x=4y

x/4 = y

x²+(x/4)² = 4²

17/16x² = 16

x = 16/root17

Feel free to prove my equation wrong, Mr. Mechanical Engineer.

x-y/3 = x/4

4(x-y) = 3x

4x-3x = 4y

x=4y

x/4 = y

x²+(x/4)² = 4²

17/16x² = 16

x = 16/root17
