The US-Canadian War of 1859: The Pig War

Well, "war", there were no actual casualties. A skirmish between the US and the British North America (ie Canada) on San Juan Island started on 15 June 1859. Over a pig. Irishman let his pig root around in the potato garden of an American. American shot the pig, Irishman asked too much in compensation, ugly words were spoken. American threatened with arrest by Brits, and troops on both sides camped on the island. Situation stood until 21 October 1872, when the Brits ceded the island and some other possessions over to the US.

Almost like the film "Canadian Bacon" in a way...

The American state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick once fought a border war.

No one died. But 2 guys did get hurt by a bear.

i don't know how Canadians got a reputation of being polite, if some dude let his pig root around in another man's garden. No one would stand for that.

A long time ago Michigan and Ohio had a "war". The dispute was over the northern part of (now) Ohio that included Toledo. To settle the dispute Congress awarded Michigan our upper peninsula (win) and Ohio got Toledo (Ha! Suck it Ohio).

there's a few islands north of the main part of Michigan. One is South Fox and it has a pretty big air strip with a huge parking lot. But it doesn't really look like there is anything on the island. Why do they have that? Also, on North Fox Island, much smaller, there appears to be a cleared out grass runway. Same question.

is it just hunting?

No, I'm making fun of QD.
Thing is, I didn't move that other thread.

I believe South Fox is privately owned and I think North Fox is like wildlife reserve/research.
