There's a reason 401(k) plans are a popular choice for those looking to set aside money for the future. Not only are contributions traditionally tax-free, but because they're deducted directly from earnings, the process of funding a 401(k) is as seamless as can be. That's why it's surprising to learn that the average American does not, in fact, have a 401(k) -- especially given the number of employees who have the option to participate in one.

How many companies offer 401(k)s?
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, only 32% of Americans are saving for retirement in a 401(k).

Seventy-eight percent of full-time workers said they live paycheck to paycheck, up from 75 percent last year, according to a recent report from CareerBuilder.

Did they count the people covered by other forms of retirement? Railroads, several states, USPS and private companies all provide other forms of retirement.

And most jobs do not, the employer sponsored pension plan is dead. Gone the way of the dinosaur.

Legislated out of existence. Mom worked for a chain of grocery stores. After they got too big the Feds stepped in and mandated they get rid of the retirement plan she had. Then it became a 401k

The big national company I work for got into some sort of unexplained trouble about ten years ago because of the way our 401k was managed. The solution, among other things, was to give everyone a 401k after three months of employment. But halved the company contribution, from 6% to 3%. We have over a 100K total employee over all the divisions, and we all have a 401k whether or not we put any of our own money into it. Seems like pretty reasonable thing to do for a sufficiently large enough company: forgo a percentage or two of the CEO's golden parachute and help out the little workers. I put 17% into it, so get 20% total, and will likely put a point or two more at my next raise. Maybe I won't have to work for Walmart after I retire.

Sanders just threw his hat into the ring saying a lot more of the country is behind his ideas this time around, which is true. 77 is just too old for the job though. I guess that will be negated by trump's age if it came to it, and the simple fact that Bernie is clearly a lot sharper, but Pence is only 59. I'd nix him in the primaries just based on age but y'all do seem to love the old as dirt folks for judges and politicians. We put our judges out to pasture at 75 max. I think it was only churchill who exceeded 70 while in office over the last century, and he was Churchill (left office the second time at 80). 50 is around the mark these days to get the job.
