As we were getting hysterical about the coronavirus....

this happened.

How we still have the death penalty in this country is beyond me. Basically the co-defendant confessed to the killings and said Woods had nothing to do with it and in fact ran when the shootings commenced
Alabama executes inmate Nathaniel Woods

By Eliott C. McLaughlin, Martin Savidge and Ray Sanchez, CNN

(CNN)Alabama executed Nathaniel Woods on Thursday for the 2004 murders of three Birmingham police officers, the state corrections department said.
Woods, 43, did not give a final statement. He was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m. (10:01 p.m. ET), the department said.

Gov. Kay Ivey declined to stop the execution, and the US Supreme Court denied a last-minute stay after first ordering a temporary halt only minutes before Woods had been scheduled to die.

Ivey did not take the decision lightly, she said in a statement, but Woods' conviction survived nine court challenges. Even if Woods did not actually kill the officers, jurors felt "he was a fully engaged participant," she said.

"There is no evidence, and no argument has been made, that Nathaniel Woods tried to stop the gunman from committing these heinous crimes. In fact, he later bragged about his participation in these horrific murders," her statement said.

Before his execution, Woods visited with relatives and an imam and spoke on the phone with his mother and friends, Alabama Department of Corrections spokeswoman Samantha Rose said.

He refused breakfast Thursday morning and for his final meal ordered sweet potatoes, spinach, chicken patties, chicken leg quarters, cooked apples, fries, two oranges and an orange-flavored drink, Rose said. He ate one bite of chicken and left the rest, she said.
Top prosecutor stands by conviction

Woods was convicted in 2005 of capital murder, but there were questions about his culpability and his representation at trial. His co-defendant, Kerry Spencer, said Woods was innocent.

In a phone interview from death row at William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Escambia County, Spencer told CNN that he alone fatally shot the three officers in 2004 when they stormed the crack house where he was sleeping. A fourth officer was shot but survived.

Woods wasn't involved, he said. In fact, Spencer said, Woods ran when the gunfire erupted..............

"he later bragged about his participation in these horrific murders"

Translation - a jailhouse snitch made some shit up and got let out early. Fairly standard playbook with the unsafe convictions.

I agree, if we're even going to have DP it should be reserved for very specific cases. Years ago in Texas (30 years or more?), there was a case of a bank heist, where shit hit the fan and the two robber inside wound up killing a few folks. The driver sat out in the car waiting, didn't know what went on in the back. The two actual murderers pled down to life, the get-away driver got the DP. Texas wound up juicing him.

Florida has a terrible rate of DP applied to people later found to be innocent, possibly the worst rate.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.
