Trump threatens shut down social media platforms after Twitter put a disinformation warning on his false tweets

Post by CaptQuint »

President Donald Trump has threatened to close down social-media platforms that he argues censor conservative voices after Twitter on Tuesday tagged some of his messages with a fact-check warning.

"Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices," Trump tweeted Wednesday. "We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016."

Twitter had long been criticized for allowing the president to spread conspiracy theories and smears against opponents despite its policies against the promotion of disinformation.

It recently came under increasing calls for it to take action against Trump after he spent weeks promoting a baseless conspiracy theory alleging that the MSNBC cohost Joe Scarborough was involved in the death of a staffer, Lori Klausutis, while he was serving as a US congressman.

Twitter has declined to take action against the president for the messages about Scarborough, but on Tuesday for the first time it put a fact-check tag on some of Trump's tweets.

The president wrote two tweets claiming "There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent."

Twitter tagged each of the two messages with a blue exclamation mark and warning message, linking to articles in The Washington Post, CNN, and other outlets that debunk the president's assertion.

Trump doubled down on his voter-fraud claims in a follow-up tweet Wednesday.

"We can't let a more sophisticated version of that happen again," Trump wrote. "Just like we can't let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country. It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!"

Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond, Virginia, said that Trump was unlikely to be able to follow through on his threat against social media companies.

"I think that it is mostly bluster. There are steps he might take, but they are likely to be slow, cumbersome and ineffective, although he does have the huge bullhorn of the presidency to persuade the voters that he is correct and deserves reelection," he explained to Business Insider by email.

"He could issue executive orders or try to persuade federal agencies to regulate or take action against Twitter or convince Congress to legislate, but none will be fast or help him before November," he expalined. "Reelection might help him achieve some of what he wants in the longer term as agencies and Congress are investigating big tech and may consider legislation but nothing will pass soon."

Trump has long accused social-media companies of bias against conservatives. In June 2019 he invited several far-right provocateurs and conspiracy theorists, some of whom had had hate speech removed by social-media platforms, to the White House for a social-media summit.

He has also credited being able to communicate on Twitter as a key factor in his election to the White House, remarking that it allows him to communicate with voters directly, unfiltered by media organizations he accuses of partisan bias.

Perhaps Trump should stop posting lies, slander, insults, libel, and conspiracy theories on Twitter?

Just a thought.

The First Amendment stops the government - the Trump administration - from interfering with free speech. That means he cannot stop Twitter from fact checking his false tweets. And the fact we are reading his daily verbal excrement on Twitter is proof that it is not stifling his speech, yet he is incapable of understanding that.

The sitting president does not understand the simplest fucking part of the constitution, and I am thrilled at how oppressed he is feeling. He is the proverbial dog that caught the car, & 3 years later the car is still dragging his orange carcass down the highway and he still cant let it go.

Trump executive order to target social media after Twitter fact-checked his false statements

Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order targeting social media following his threats to "strongly regulate" or "close down" platforms after Twitter fact-checked his false statements about voter fraud.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters that the order is "pertaining to social media" but did not provide details, according to reports.

The president has claimed without evidence that social media companies suppress conservative posts after Twitter attached a fact-checking notice to the president's messages that falsely claimed that mail-in ballots promote voter fraud.

Twitter labelled two posts in which the president called postal voting "fraudulent" and predicted that "mail boxes will be robbed" as "potentially misleading".

A link appears under the posts reads: "Get the facts about mail-in ballots". The link sends users to another Twitter page with a fact-checking articles from CNN and The Washington Post, among others.

Postal worker accused of pro-Republican mail ballot fraud

Right-wingers spread false claims of voter fraud ahead of Iowa caucus
In a statement, Twitter said that the president's tweets "contain potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labelled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots."

Mr Trump has claimed that expanding voting by mail would negatively impact Republican candidates, suggesting that the party does not want to making voting more accessible to people who typically vote Democrat.

In an April interview with Fox News, he said: "If you ever agree to it, you'd never have a Republican elected in this country again."

The president has also directed his allies in Congress to "fight very hard when it comes to state wide mail-in voting", he wrote in a 8 April post.

"Democrats are clamouring for it," he said. "Tremendous potential for voter fraud, and for whatever reason, doesn't work out well for Republicans."

Last week, the president threatened to "hold up funding" to Michigan, a crucial battleground state as his campaign eyes his re-election in November, as the state mulls plans to expand absentee ballots amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Twitter refuses widower's plea to remove trolling Trump tweets
In a post that has since been deleted, he falsely claimed that the state had sent out ballots "illegally" — in reality, the state had mailed out ballot applications, not the ballots themselves.

"Breaking: Michigan sends absentee ballots to 7.7 million people ahead of Primaries and the General Election," he wrote. "This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State. I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!"

He later deleted the post but sent out another that afternoon, falsely claiming that the applications were sent "illegally".

The Michigan Department of State's Bureau of Election said it would send 6.4 million registered voters living in the state applications to vote by mail in the upcoming elections, along with the 1.3 million permanent absent voters who already had the option to apply for absentee voting.

In a statement, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said: "By mailing applications, we have ensured that no Michigander has to choose between their health and their right to vote. ... Voting by mail is easy, convenient, safe, and secure, and every voter in Michigan has the right to do it."

She said that "mailing applications to all registered voters is one of the ways that we are ensuring Michigan's elections will continue to be safe, accurate and secure."

Mr Trump himself voted by mail in the Florida primaries in February. He also has voted absentee in New York during the 2018 midterm elections.

Ms McEnany also has voted by mail, nearly a dozen times, records show, despite her despite her continued defence of the president's insistence that mail-in voting leads to fraud.

The president also has used his massive social media platform to spread conspiracy theories accusing MSNBC host Joe Scarborough of having something to do with the death of a former staffer in 2001.

Twitter said it will not remove the posts, despite pleas from Timothy Klausutis, the widower of the late Ms Klausutis, but the company said it was considering measures to label misleading posts or take similar measures to identify misinformation.

Isn't there some incredibly rich Trumpeteer that could release a few of their dollars to make their own SMS-based media platform? Technically and technologically there is nothing preventing a person coming up with their own Twitter-like platform. But talk of regulating is a real slap in the face, all Trump has moaned on about in 3.5 yrs is getting rid of regulation. But now he likes the idea of regulating a corporation's activities? :?

Free enterprise when it suits, regulation when it suits.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

I will put some time into it later. Just a quick glance found this:

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker told the president in a video conference on March 19 that he tried to place “three big orders” for PPE, but lost to the federal government.

so, based on that we know the Federal Govenment (Trump) had an order for PPE on March 19. Three months prior to that (according to CaptQueef's post) would have been Dec 19. Why in the world would the federal government be ordering PPE in mid-December?

I'm certain some simple searching would find Federal government orders for PPE prior to March 19th, that was just the first thing that popped up.

Fact Check Finding: CaptQueef is providing false and misleading information in a blatant attempt to sway the election.
