But how do you know he is a republican?

A South Florida man was arrested Friday after accused of threatening to kill several high-profile Democratic lawmakers, specifically citing his support for President Donald Trump and his disdain for Rep. Ilhan Omar in light of her comments about the 9/11 terror attacks.

"They Killed Us": Crowdfunding Sites Have Cut Off An Armed Militia Detaining Migrants At The Border

A right-wing “patriot” group that detained hundreds of migrants at gunpoint at the southern border this week after raising thousands of dollars online was notified by crowdfunding giants PayPal and GoFundMe that its fundraising campaigns have been shut down, dealing a major blow to the militia's operation.

Known as the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), the militia has been patrolling a remote stretch of the New Mexico desert near the Mexico border for months with heavily armed members reportedly detaining dozens of migrants a day.

The group has used the thousands of dollars donated online to supply food, gasoline, propane, and a portable toilet at a camp in Sunland, New Mexico, but by Friday members of the militia learned they would no longer be able to use PayPal or GoFundMe to raise money.

"They killed us," Mark Cheney, who described himself as commander of United Constitutional Patriots, told BuzzFeed News in a phone interview. "I have to find some other way for people to donate."

.

On Friday, the militia was notified that both their PayPal and GoFundMe campaigns had been shut down for violating the crowdfunding sites' policy on the promotion of hate or violence, and in at least one instance allegedly using the funds to buy firearms. Cheney denied that the group used donations to purchase weapons.

"The account associated with United Constitutional Patriots has been closed due to a violation of our Acceptable Use Policy," a PayPal spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in a statement. "We do not allow PayPal services to be used to promote hate, violence, or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory."

That decision, Cheney said, dealt a significant blow to the group's operations in a remote area near the southern border, where costs can quickly add up.

"As the commander, it's my responsibility to find some way for people to donate," he said.

Members of the group have been camped near the border since November, hoping to shut off the flow of immigrants crossing the border they have called an "invasion," echoing the hardline rhetoric by President Trump. Leaders say in that time they've detained more than 3,000 migrants, and members have posted dozens of videos online showing migrants, including young children, held in detention near the border.

But this week, state and local officials issued warnings to the group after videos suggested members were stopping immigrants at gunpoint, wearing badges, and falsely identifying themselves as law enforcement.

Cheney, who has been a member of the United Constitutional Patriots since its inception six years ago, didn't dispute that its members were armed when detaining immigrants at the border.

"Oh sure, we'd be fools not to be," he said.

He conceded some of the men carry badges that resemble those worn by law enforcement.

"If [immigrants] can't tell the difference, that's their problem," he said.

In at least one of the videos posted online by the militia, a person is heard yelling at migrants, "Policia!" or "Police," in heavily accented Spanish before detaining the border crossers. Cheney said the person yelling, "must have been one of the immigrants."

On Thursday, the New Mexico Attorney General released a statement condemning the militia and saying it "should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement."

Peter Simonson, executive director for the ACLU of New Mexico, said citizen arrests can only be made in the case of a felony. Illegal entry into the US is a misdemeanor, and not reason enough for a person to carry out a citizen's arrest.

Simonson said he grew concerned about the militia impersonating law enforcement officers after watching videos posted by the group.

"That's one crime that is a federal felony," Simonson told BuzzFeed News. "I also suspect the militias could be guilty of false imprisonment and maybe even kidnapping, and that's just the tip of the iceberg."

Armed detention of large groups of people who recently crossed the border is "completely unprecedented," Simonson said, even when compared to the Minutemen Project that descended on the border in 2005 and 2006.

"This pales in comparison to anything I've previously seen," Simonson said. "This underscores the importance of authorities prosecuting thee issues to the fullest extent of the law. They need to send a signal to any other group considering this type of anarchy, it is simply prohibited and illegal."

Cheney contends that what the group does — there are currently six members stationed at the border — is legal and a "duty."

The United Constitutional Patriots have had a sporadic presence at the border for about two years, a sight welcomed by the local sheriff and Border Patrol officers, he said.

"If the Border Patrol says, 'We don't need you,' we'll leave," he said.

Javier Guerra, police chief for the city of Sunland Park, near the militia's base camp, told BuzzFeed News he warned the group not to detain migrants or point their weapons at people. Members of the group, Guerra said, told him they had descended on the area at the invitation of Border Patrol and the White House, and claimed that they had a direct line to President Trump.

After seeing news reports about the group's actions Thursday, Guerra said he went to the militia’s camp and explicitly told them they do not have the authority to conduct a citizen's arrest.

“It’s illegal,” Guerra said he told them.

The migrants detained in recent weeks by the militia have since been released from federal custody, the police chief said, adding that authorities would likely need material witnesses to build a case against the group despite the videos they posted.

US Customs and Border Protection officials said in a statement the agency did not "endorse or condone private groups or organizations taking enforcement matters into their own hands."

But Cheney said their interaction with agents at the border was far from adversarial. Militia members, he said, speak with agents "on an hourly basis," coordinating operations.

"They're happy we're here," he said about Border Patrol. "We have a direct line to the local outpost."

Although the group is armed, he said, they've never had the need to fire a weapon. Members of the militia instruct migrants to sit until Border Patrol agents arrive, and most of them, he said, follow their command.

"If they don't stop, we can't stop them," Cheney said. "We're not there to hurt anybody, harm anybody. We're here to help slow it down."

And despite the warnings from state and federal officials, concerns from civil liberty groups, and a halt to their funding stream, the group intends on staying put.

"Some people might not want us up there," Cheney said. "All I could say is, 'tough.'"

Leader of right-wing militia ‘planned assassination of Obama, Clinton, and Soros’, FBI claims

Image

The head of a far-right New Mexico militia group known for detaining undocumented families at gunpoint has been accused of claiming to train a group to assassinate Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and billionaire Democratic donor George Soros.

The accusations follow after Larry Mitchell Hopkins, a 69-year-old who lives in a borer town near El Paso, was arrested on charges of possession of firearms and ammunition. He had previously been convicted in 2006 on charges and firearm possession.

The FBI now claims that Mr Hopkins told witnesses during a 2017 investigation that his militia was planning to assassinate the three Democratic figures, according to Reuters.

Mr Hopkins’ militia group is called the United Constitutional Patriots, which has a Facebook page claiming it is composed of “Americans that believe in the constitution and the rights of every American that will stand up for there[sic] rights in unity and help keep America safe”.

The group detained some 200 migrants as they crossed the US-Mexico border last week seeking asylum. Many of those detained by the militia were reportedly Central Americans, according to the New York Times.

The group is said to have detained some 5,600 migrants in the past 60 days alone.

The group that Mr Hopkins leads in southern New Mexico is one of many militia groups that have been operating on the US-Mexico border for years, with the stated goal of stopping or slowing illegal US immigration flows.

Civil rights groups and immigrant advocates have criticized the tactics, and claim that these militia groups illegally detain migrants and kidnap them by impersonating law enforcement.

Allegra Love, the executive director of the Santa Fe Dreamers Project, a group that provides free legal services to immigrants, told the Santa Fe New Mexican that the militias are outrageous.

“We don’t need citizens confronting them at gunpoint,” Ms Love said, referring to migrants seeking asylum in the United States and coming from violent nations like Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Man making death threat to Rep. Ilhan Omar had over 1,000 bullets and illegal guns

Law enforcement discovered a cache of ammunition and illegal guns in the New York home of a man arrested after threatening to shoot Rep. Ilhan Omar, federal prosecutors say.

Patrick W. Carlineo Jr., 55, is said to have called the office of the Minnesota congresswoman in March to threaten her life and repeat an anti-Muslim conspiracy theory.

“Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a [expletive] terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her [expletive] skull,” Carlineo said in the call, according to the U.S. Attorney General’s Office.

Omar, along with fellow freshman Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, is one of the first Muslim women in history to be elected to Congress.

[FBI investigating assassination threat against Rep. Omar scrawled on gas station bathroom stall]

During a police search of Carlineo’s Steuben County home, officers confiscated six firearms, including an AK-47 and a .45-caliber handgun, federal prosecutors said in a bail hearing Monday, local CBS affiliate WROC reported.

Carlineo was charged with threatening to assault and murder a United States official, a story on the station’s website said.

The guns were owned illegally, because Carlineo was previously convicted of a felony, WROC reported.

Prosecutors say the alleged death threat to Omar’s office was made on the afternoon of March 21.

Carlineo’s attorney argued that what was said in the call, which was not recorded, is in dispute. Carlineo maintains he said, “If our forefathers were still alive, they would put a bullet in [Omar’s] skull,” according to Rochester First.

The alleged call, traced to Carlineo’s girlfriend, was made before a recent surge in death threats to Omar.

Those threats followed a video tweeted by President Donald Trump that interspersed remarks she made to a Muslim civil rights organization with footage from the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi contacted the House Sergeant at Arms to ensure the U.S. Capitol Police would conduct a security assessment to protect Omar, her family and staff.

Omar has been the target of Islamophobic conspiracy theories throughout her early tenure in office.

The Florida man who mailed pipe bombs to critics of President Donald Trump said in a letter to a federal judge that attending a Trump rally "became like a new found drug," according to documents released Tuesday.

Cesar Sayoc, 57, who pleaded guilty to explosives charges last month, claimed in a series of letters that he has abused steroids for over 40 years. The letters were posted in his court case file.

His lawyers say they will cite Sayoc's extensive steroid use at his August sentencing and have asked the court not to conduct a psychological exam.

In the handwritten letters filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Sayoc told U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff that "politics is dirty, ruthless, deadly." He wrote, "I wished it had never come along into my life."

Pipe bomb suspect: 'Devices were not ever meant to work ... hurt or harm'

He faces a mandatory 10-year prison term and up to life at his sentencing, scheduled for Aug. 5.

Sayoc, who described a Make America Great Again rally as fun, also wrote he "was on the front lines of war between right & left" at a rally in Chicago. He is linked to Twitter accounts vilifying Democrats, including liberal donor George Soros, to whom he mailed one of the bombs. Sayoc also drove a van covered in pro-Trump and anti-Democrat stickers.

He previously said he never intended to hurt anyone when he mailed 16 pipe bombs to CNN and top Democrats, including former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and ex-President Barack Obama. Investigators found and disabled the devices, resulting in no injuries.

In a letter filed earlier this month, Sayoc wrote "extreme emotional circumstances" in court influenced his answer when a judge asked if he knew the explosive devices would cause harm

John Earnest is a 19-year-old San Diego man who is accused of shooting four people, killing one, at Chabad of Poway synagogue in California before he was arrested. Earnest posted a 4,000-word anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and white supremacist manifesto he wrote and published online before the shooting and said in a post on 8chan that he would be live streaming the attack, but no video of the shooting has emerged. A Facebook page he linked to in the post has been deactivated.

69-Year-Old Sunday School Teacher Kills Husband For Watching Porn

A 69-year-old Sunday school teacher in Arkansas shot and killed her husband because he had committed the sin of watching pornography.

An Arkansas woman has been convicted of fatally shooting her husband last summer for his refusal to quit porn.

Patricia Hill, 69, was found guilty on Tuesday of second-degree murder in the July fatal shooting of her husband, Frank Hill, at their Pine Bluff home, about 40 miles southeast of Little Rock.

An Arkansas woman “flew into a rage” and fatally shot her husband inside his man cave after spotting a porn channel on their satellite television bill, according to prosecutors.

I wonder why?

Two members of a white supremacist group pleaded guilty Friday to federal rioting charges in connection with a white nationalist rally in Virginia and political rallies in California.

Benjamin Drake Daley, 26, of Redondo Beach, California, and Michael Paul Miselis, 30, of Lawndale, California, each pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to riot.

Daley and Miselis are the last of four members of the Rise Above Movement indicted in Virginia to plead guilty. The militant white supremacist group was known for having members who train in mixed martial arts street-fighting techniques.

Two other members of the group — Cole White and Thomas Gillen — each previously pleaded guilty to the same charge.

All four men admitted they punched and kicked demonstrators who showed up to protest against white nationalists during a torch-lit march at the University of Virginia and the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville in August 2017.

The men were indicted in October on two charges: traveling to incite riots and conspiracy to riot.

Prosecutors said photos and video footage showed the men attacking counterprotesters in Charlottesville and also participating in violence at political rallies the same year in Huntington Beach and Berkeley, California.

Each man faces up to five years in prison on the charge, but defendants often get less than the maximum under federal sentencing guidelines. An attorney representing Miselis did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

Daley moved to dismiss the charges against him, arguing that the federal Anti-Riot Act is unconstitutional because it is overbroad and vague, and infringes on First Amendment activities. The judge denied his request.

“Instead of being tried under a broad, vague and unconstitutional statute, Mr. Daley has chosen to plead guilty and appeal the constitutionality of the statute” to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, said Daley’s attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Lisa Lorish.

Prosecutors said Daley, one of the founders of the Rise Above Movement, was “chiefly responsible” for organizing the group’s presence at the Unite the Right rally.

“These avowed white supremacists traveled to Charlottesville to incite and commit acts of violence, not to engage in peaceful First Amendment expression,” U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen said in a statement.

As part of their guilty pleas, the men admitted their acts of violence were not in self-defense.

Their arrests came more than a year after hundreds of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville in part to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Violence prompted authorities to force the Unite the Right rally to disband. Afterward, a woman was killed and dozens were injured when a car driven by a self-avowed white supremacist plowed into a crowd of peaceful counterprotesters.

James Fields Jr. was convicted of state murder and wounding charges by a jury and later pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges. He is awaiting sentencing in both cases.

President Donald Trump sparked a public outcry after he blamed both sides for the violence.

White supremacists carrying Nazi flags interrupt Arkansas Holocaust Remembrance Day event

A group of white supremacists carrying Nazi flags and hurling racial slurs briefly interrupted a Holocaust remembrance event in Arkansas earlier this week, local media reported.

The town of Russellville holds the March of Remembrance every year to honor and commemorate the survivors and the millions of people – mostly Jewish – who were killed during the Holocaust.

On Sunday, the peaceful event – which included a World War II veteran who helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp in April 1945 – was interrupted when members of the Shield Wall Network walked by them yelling racial slurs.

“It made me feel terrible. It made me feel terrible for my friends,” event organizer Joyce Griffis told KFSM. “They were talking to us like we were pieces of nothing.”

Billy Roper, the leader of the Shield Wall Network, told the Courier News that they protested the march due to the controversy surrounding a scholarship at Arkansas Tech University that was named after late professor Michael Link. The Anti-Defamation League and others have accused Link of being a Holocaust denier.

The university has said the claims against Link cannot be substantiated with evidence.

“The purpose of showing up at the event was to show solidarity with an honored professor’s memory and opposition to the outside Jewish agitators, the ADL, whom Dr. Sarah Stein brought in to try and pressure my alma mater, ATU, into censoring free speech and academic expression,” Roper said.

Stein, who is Jewish, teaches at Arkansas Tech, KFSM reported.

Despite the interruption, the event continued as planned. The speakers included Jason Dowd, the grandson of two Holocaust victims; Beryl Wolfson, a World War II veteran, and Stein.

Wolfson, 96, said he saw the liberation of the concentration camp with his own eyes and says he shares his story so that people “never forget, because it could happen again.”

Robert Vork, an associate professor of English at Arkansas Tech University and an attendee at the event, told the Courier News that listening to Wolfson recall his memories from Dachau was “one of the most moving, revealing and angering things” he’d ever witnessed.

"That courageous old man's shaking voice is a call to all of us,” he added.

Mississippi lawmaker was drunk when he ‘punched’ his wife in the face over sex, report says

State Rep. Douglas McLeod was arrested after he allegedly punched his wife when she failed to get undressed quickly enough when he wanted to have sex, according to an investigative report filed with the George County Sheriff’s Department.

The 58-year-old Republican lawmaker was intoxicated and holding a glass of alcohol in his hand when deputies responded to the McLeod home shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, the report said.

Over the course of the investigation, deputies wrote in the report that the state lawmaker had punched his wife in the face, bloodying her nose. Deputies found blood on the couple’s bed and on the floor in the same room.

When a deputies arrived, the report said, McLeod opened the door and they told him that they were there because a domestic assault had been reported. “Are you kidding me?” the lawmaker asked.

Then, the state representative walked inside his home, and another deputy came to the scene. The deputies could hear McLeod inside the home, yelling that “the cops are here,” the report said.

McLeod stumbled back to the front door and walked outside.

“Mr. McLeod had slurred speech and walked slow in a zigzag pattern,” according to a description by deputies, who said he was so inebriated he had to grab a hand rail to maintain his balance.

McLeod tried to explain to deputies that everything was OK, then said something else the deputies said they couldn’t understand because of his slurred speech.

When deputies went inside, they saw two women standing at the top of a stairwell, both of whom the deputies described as frightened. McLeod’s wife eventually came outside after deputies assured her they would keep her away from her husband.

The deputy said McLeod’s wife was shaking and upset.

McLeod’s wife said her husband was drunk and “just snapped,” as he often does when under the influence of alcohol, the report said.

Another woman who was there said McLeod’s wife came running up to her room, her face bloodied. The woman shut the door and locked it with McLeod’s wife inside.

The other woman said McLeod started banging on the door and telling the women to open it. He told the other woman if she didn’t open the door, he’d “kill her (expletive) dog.”

McLeod’s wife did not want go to the hospital by ambulance, but assured authorities she’d have her daughter take her to get checked so authorities would have a report of the injuries.

McLeod was taken into custody on a charge of misdemeanor domestic violence and booked in the George County jail by early Sunday morning.

McLeod is out of jail on a $1,000 signature bond.

He did not respond to questions for comment.

Sheriff Keith Havard said the investigation is continuing.

McLeod, of Lucedale, has been a state representative since 2012. His district includes residents in George, Jackson, Stone and Forrest counties.

McLeod is married with three children.

By Tuesday morning, state Sen. David Blount had called on McLeod to resign.
And by Tuesday after, speaker Phillip Gunn had also made a statement: “I have attempted to contact Rep. McLeod to request his resignation, if in fact, these allegations are true. These actions are unacceptable for anyone.”

Leaked Proud Boys Chats Show Members Plotting Violence At Rallies

Image

The Proud Boys want the public to believe that they’re a “drinking club” who only resort to violence to defend themselves from anti-fascist protesters during political rallies.

But in private, these extremists have discussed injuring and even killing their adversaries, plotting tactics and optics for months in order to assert a claim of self-defense should they face charges.

According to private chat logs obtained exclusively by HuffPost, the punch-happy, pro-Trump street gang was particularly excited for its “Resist Marxism” rally, scheduled for April 6 in Providence, Rhode Island. With the right plan of attack, members said, this one could put them back on the map.

This mother f**ker needs to meet a 7mm [Magnum rifle] from about 500 yards.
Proud Boy Shaun Hufton in private chats.
The group had been floundering ever since 10 of its members were arrested for assaulting protesters outside a GOP event in New York City last year. Their leader, Vice Media co-founder Gavin McInnes, reportedly arranged for his followers’ surrender.

In the chats, covering a time period between February and March of this year, members claimed they needed a conclusive “win” this time around, which they defined as a bloody battle against “antifa” in Providence. If this brawl were bigger and more violent than previous iterations, they might regain some of the street cred and followers they’d lost.

“We’ll grow this group of patriots and we’ll never back down,” wrote the event’s organizer, Proud Boys member Alan Swinney, in the private chat messages. “If we win, it will make more patriots come to the next rally. We just need to go there and we’ll beat them. We’ll have enough to crush them at some point.”

A source with direct knowledge of the exchanges confirmed to HuffPost that the logs were authentic. Swinney also responded to several screenshots. When asked about discussions of violence in the chat logs, he told HuffPost, “They’re warriors. ... Choir boys don’t go up against people like that [anti-fascists]. It takes a person with a certain type of mindset.”

The logs contained a revolving door of up to 30 Proud Boys and their allies, including militia members and other “patriots,” as Swinney called them. Those named in this story either publicly identify as members of the Proud Boys or affiliated groups, or have been identified as such in national news stories or by the groups’ leaders.

Looking forward to Providence, members in the private channel were pumped for the opportunity to cause mayhem. One Proud Boy named Anthony Mastrostefano said:

“All I want to do is smash commies too. Actually I’m lying, I’m way past just hitting them. When the time comes I will stop at nothing to fully eradicate them all!”

“We’re A Drinking Club”
The Proud Boys have a yearslong history of violence, and they’ve built an entire brand off of the fights they’ve helped organize in American streets, from spars in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, to attacks in Providence and New York.

McInnes created a set of rules by which his gang members could gain clout in the organization, which include forgoing masturbation, getting a Proud Boy tattoo and fighting in the name of the gang.

Their leadership has always claimed that such violence is incidental, acts of self-defense necessitated by their anti-fascist opponents, who show up to each of their purported free-speech events in protest.

They’ve gone as far as to file lawsuits to maintain that facade ― on Monday, several of their members stood at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and announced that they were suing the Southern Poverty Law Center for labeling them as a hate group. McInnes himself filed a defamation lawsuit against the civil rights organization in February.

“We’re a drinking club that stands behind Donald Trump,” said Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio at the D.C. event. “That’s enough to earn hate of the left.”

But private chat logs leaked to HuffPost fly directly in the face of that sentiment, showing Proud Boys premeditating violence they hope to commit. They spent months before the April rally meticulously planning strategies for injuring protesters.

Members discuss what weapons they might use against the “commies” they’ll meet in the street, which police officers might be sympathetic to them, how they’ll raise funding to fly out their long-distance compatriots, and how they’ll “bait” protesters into throwing the first punch so that they can claim self-defense.

HuffPost has reviewed dozens of private messages shared among a small group of Proud Boys and their allies, mostly on the social app Telegram, in the months leading up to the “Resist Marxism” rally they had planned for April. The chat logs were leaked by a source who wished to remain anonymous out of fear for their safety.

The rally ultimately didn’t happen, but the logs provide an inside look into the extremist group’s strategy as well as evidence that such planning continues to this day.

The Proud Boys Premeditate Violence
“Group, meet Kindness,” wrote Proud Boy Jason Cardona on Telegram, above a selfie in which he’s holding his pet, an ax.

“Ahhh, Kindness,” crowed Proud Boy Peter Scott in response. Scott then posted a picture of himself holding a large knife. Another member, Jake Adkins, posted a short video depicting an unknown device, asking the group, “Think I can get this thru in a checked bag?”

On Telegram, the Proud Boys privately fantasized about the weapons they might like to use against anti-fascist protesters at the rally in Providence. But they were also cautious about what weapons they told others to bring, as they didn’t want to face more arrests.

Scott noted that mace is “100 percent legal for self-defense” and directed everyone else in the chat to “armor up boys!” Makeshift armor is a common sight among Proud Boys, militia groups and other far-right extremists at these rallies. Depending on where a gathering occurs, concealed guns are also a possibility.

“If you’re in a state that can show up with your guns that’s fine. Up here in New England you can’t but some of us still show up,” wrote Proud Boy member Kenny Lizardo. HuffPost reported on Lizardo last year after he showed up on the doorstep of a comedian to intimidate him over his tweets

“I carry but it seems like to [sic] much could go wrong with that,” wrote Proud Boy Jason Lewis. “Big patriot fists and boots will do just fine.”

The gun-measuring contest was interspersed with analysis of street-level warfare. They explored how to counter “black bloc” tactics used by anti-fascists, in which protesters wear all black to make it hard to distinguish individuals, and they shared stories about previous exploits, most of which included getting a solid punch in without getting caught.

In some chats, the Proud Boys claimed to have ties to local law enforcement, though it’s unclear how legitimate those relationships were. As reported by the Portland, Oregon, alt-weekly Willamette Week, the Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer ― their close allies on the West Coast ― have had some success garnering police sympathy during their fights.

“Last year we had two different cops ‘admiring’ our work,” said John Stewart. “One told us ‘they don’t want to fight you guys again they are pussies.’ The other thanked us as we walked by him.”

But they would never learn if their apparent clout with police would help them stage their April 6 rally in Providence ― it fell apart before it began. The national Proud Boys “elders” announced at the time that the gathering was postponed while they focused on the trials of those 10 Proud Boys arrested and charged over last year’s attacks in New York City.

They Know What They’re Doing
The Proud Boys repeatedly acknowledged that their plans could get them in trouble.

“I advise all of you to only speak in terms of self-defense and never speak of premeditated violence,” wrote a man who identified himself as Kyle “Based Stickman” Chapman, an extremist who has previously been convicted of violent felonies and is known for his attacks at rallies and repeated parole violations, among other crimes.

He added: “I could be liable for what happens in Providence. So please stop making it easy for these people to prosecute us by putting threats of violence in writing that can be used against us later.”

Few seemed to listen, and leaders like Swinney had to attempt damage control on a regular basis.

For example, Proud Boy Shaun Hufton at one point made a direct threat to kill an anti-fascist activist who goes by the pseudonym Antifash Gordon on Twitter:

“This mother fucker needs to meet a 7mm [Magnum rifle] from about 500 yards,” he said, to which Scott responded, “Do not post any threats on here, the feds will use it against [us] in court.”

For his part, Swinney often repeated the “defense-only” deflection, demanding that other Proud Boys characterize their “rallies against communists” as acts of preservation and their presence as a security detail for rallygoers.

In an interview, Swinney corroborated the authenticity of chat screenshots HuffPost showed him and said he personally agreed with statements about “smashing commies” like Mastrostefano’s.

“He specifically said ‘when the time comes,’” Swinney told HuffPost, adding later: “When the time comes, and the order is given, I’ll do whatever it takes to stop these people. The constitution is the greatest document of freedom ever written. I’ll give my life to defend it if nessicary [sic].”

Swinney also confirmed that the Proud Boys had been planning another rally in Providence, which they hoped to hold June 1, but which now appears to be on the rocks if not canceled. He said he wouldn’t be going due to his personal monetary woes, which he blamed on “the left, SPLC and feds.”
