Nice quote. Tell me exactly who your dim leadership is working for when they encourage immigration laws to be broken?

California beaurocrats have rolled out the welcome mat to illegals. If they make it across, they are literally home free.

California is under no obligation to enforce The Federal Governments laws or house immigrants for them, Charlie is now a big fan of unfunded mandates

CA sure likes that $350 billion in Fed money each year. Seems like a good place to 'find' some money for funding the Wall.

Congress couldn't either, it would just get sued on different grounds, like the 10th amendment. The basic case has already been before the SC, back when conservatives were in favour of states rights, and the ruling was that congress cannot direct state law enforcement to do squat. Since they'd be withholding funding in an attempt to do just that, the precedent is already in place that they can't. Printz v US.

The Court constructed its opinion on the old principle that state legislatures are not subject to federal direction. The Court explained that while Congress may require the federal government to regulate commerce directly, in this case by performing background-checks on applicants for handgun ownership, the Necessary and Proper Clause does not empower it to compel state CLEOs to fulfill its federal tasks for it - even temporarily. The Court added that the Brady Bill could not require CLEOs to perform the related tasks of disposing of handgun-application forms or notifying certain applicants of the reasons for their refusal in writing, since the Brady Bill reserved such duties only for those CLEO's who voluntarily accepted them.

Trump might have one option, which is to federalise the california national guard and order them to enforce immigration laws. Eisenhower did it in Little Rock when Arkansas refused to enforce desegregation. The constitution explicitly empowers the national guard to enforce the laws of the union. Probably not though, Trump would have to make the case that California's refusal to help enforce immigration law is an insurrection, which it ain't. In Arkansas the governor had called up the guard to actively prevent federal law being enforced.
