What is the oldest family photo you have?

All the news from the peanut gallery and where all the nasty trash talk fails miserably.

What is the oldest family photo you have?

#1

Post by beagleboy »

My oldest is my great grandmother when she was 17 so it would be 1900. This is she and her siblings- no clue how they appear to have money since their grandparents were immigrants and their parents owned a small farm. She's middle row left. They likely spoke mostly German at this point and their English was almost certainly very rough. The town didn't turn to speaking English until 1941.

Her husband was the guy top row far left. This is likely the same year and I still have the bat he's holding. It has his initials and the year he made it carved into it.

He died at 41 of a brain tumor. He had 5 brothers and all but one died young from heart attacks. All but one owned bars / taverns and the one who didn't worked as a bartender at one of the bars.

Isn't it weird how people used to dress up for stuff? To be so poor, yet find the money to make sure you had something fancy to wear.

For King and Country, he later fought in The First World War and was gassed by The Germans. My Uncle has his war medals and a letter from The King in a frame.

He was in Ireland, after The Boer War he moved to Canada then sailed for Britain on a ocean liner converted to a troop ship.

It's kinda hard to tell with that photo and I'm kinda hazy on English regimental history, but that looks like the Scottish Highlander uniform. He looks to be wearing a kilt.

I sent pics of all his shit to a military historian and he was shocked that he survived both wars.

The oldest family photos I've seen were family heirlooms showing unknown distant relatives, Confederate soldiers, the like. They were daguerreotype. So, maybe late 1840,- early 1860's.

Quint is taking a picture of himself in a similar outfit as his GGdad only with latex gloves and a mask to commemorate his survival of the Wuhan Virus of 2020 to add to the family portraits.

Biker wrote: Fri May 22, 2020 9:15 pm I dont have many old pics, as my parents still have them. This one is of my dad and tias before getting shipped out to Vietnam, despite only having been in the country for 5 years and not a citizen. In fact, his deployment was held up because of his residency paperwork and he called my Vo in tears begging for him to help get the proper paperwork in quickly. He was only delayed for two days and then joined his unit. Meanwhile, Trump, Biden, Clinton, Romney, and on and on were doing everything they could to not serve their own country.

Yep. Easier to send young men and women to die in wars with a stroke of a pen.

After my Grandmothers death I thought I was gonna get it but did not. Last time I visited I asked where it was as it was not it's usual spot. It was in a dusty box in the basement. Needless to say I was quite miffed and it caused some bad feeling as I would have it reset in musesum glass and promintly display it with my Grandfathers WWII medals. I am the oldest male in the family after him so I'll get someday (along with the massive gun collection I hope)

Any clue what's the significance behind that white thing at the belt with the 3 downword prongs?
