I figured most of you guys are rednecks so it would be a great place for advice.

i am looking at a 2009 ford f150 supercrew 4x4 or a 2012 ram 1500 4x4

Why those specific years?

Ford over any other. Unless you can steal one.

why do you want 4x4? i'm not trying to talk you out of it, just wondering if it is for towing or just off road mud situations.

Why would you buy an 11 year old anything?

those are the 2 used trucks i found that are not junk. i am selling my runner for it.

4x4 because a lot of the places i launch my boat have shitty ramps and because my cabin is right below the snow line. i will be in the snow pretty regularly during the winters.

Hmm. well, if that's the case, i would go with the Ford. Only because that's the only trucks I buy and I haven't had much trouble with them. The F150 should be fine. If you were doing a lot of towing, I would recommend a diesel, but if its just occasional, it wouldn't be worth the price. An F250 or larger will be a rougher ride for the added power, so again, if its not towing all the time, the F150 would be fine.

One of my partners has a camper that he occasionally tows and so he upgraded to an F250 for the power towing it. when he traded he went back down to the F150 because he didn't like the rough ride.

And I have one crew that had an F250 diesel and they pull a trailer every day. The last truck i bought them i dropped down to a gasoline F250 and they hate it compared to the diesel for towing. But its about an $8,000 hit up front with no resale bump at trade.

If it's just going to be a cottage truck I'd go with the Ford. They have a much better turning radius.
But it's 11 years old so take it to a shop and have a reputable mechanic give it the once over. Have him pay particular attention to the power steering pressure line. The 2008-2010 150's are notorious for leaky connections on power steering pressure lines.

i buy all of my trucks way out in a small town over 100 miles from here. they can get me the same truck that a big city dealer can get me, but they have a much better market for the trade-ins. and they will deliver, so its all just done over the phone.

This is true. Never trade-in a pickup truck in the city. Find a small town somewhere in farming country.

Don’t buy the Dodge. They are great looking vehicles but every Dodge that I have owned has taken a shit on us at around 100,00” miles.

Used vehicles have gone through the roof. My vehicle is in the shop for 45,000 mile service. One of the salesmen is begging me to sell it to them

Hertz has to sell 185,000 vehicles by the end of the year as part of its bankruptcy workout, see if they have anything.

My F250 beats the hell out of me. Except when I’ve got a full load for the dump. I can’t believe how much torque I have. I lug it up the incline to the wastefill @ 1500 rpm, just for fun.

My brother just traded in his 2008 Ram 3500 with close to 400,000 miles on it.
that had to have been a diesel, though.

My brother just traded in his 2008 Ram 3500 with close to 400,000 miles on it. It still ran pretty good. His new 3500 was 57 grand though!
He was lucky. Like I said, they look great but we have had issues with every Dodge that we have ever owned. We had a Plymouth minivan, a Ram pickup and my youngest son has a Dodge Charger. All three of them took a shit on us starting at 90,000 to 100,000 miles despite going all of the routine maintenance. The van was a new vehicle and the Ram and the Charger were purchased used.

I have seen some great deals from Hertz and some not so great deals but it is definitely worth a look.

Toyota Hilux end of story. You tube search Top Gear Toyota Hilux, they tried to destroy it and couldn’t, it’s a great truck. That said I like my Mitsubishi L200 Animal. I have no experience of the F150/250 over this side of the pond so can’t comment on them.

That was like an 86 toyota. They do not make Toyotas like they used to.
I've got 150K miles on my V8 2006 4Runner. I'm hoping for at least another 100K.

If you decide on the Ford, just be aware they have lots of problems with that 5.4 engine cam phasers and oiling issues. I probably do 1 a month and its not a cheap repair.
