A 1900 lb projectile from the USS New Jersey's 16" Mark 7 gun, was found and eliminated by the MAG in the province of Quang Tri, Viet Nam

There is quite a lot of explosive in that shell

If it is the 1900 lb round then that is the explosive round. The armor piecing round was around 2700 lbs.

im not the smartest person in the room..so i have to ask. isn't the shell the the casing the thing would sit in? i am not very familiar with large projectiles. so that thing would explode as well...so if its armor piecing it just lands and if its not that thing would be filled with explosives and blow up?

Re: CQ's Military thread
When the USS Missouri was moored in Washington they had one of these projectiles on the deck. That picture doesn't really give a sense of just how damn big they are.
What if it was one guy with six guns?

my son is a marine. because of his mos...hes a combat tactical air traffic controller (i dont know the actual name) because of his mos he was always stationed on airforce bases. in japan, korea and in the middle east he was always on non-marine bases. he was lucky as the accommodations are nicer and the food is better.VinceBordenIII wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 4:17 pmWas buying a car a few years ago, the salesman was a former Marine, as am I. Told me he was stationed at Miramar.
"Miramar?!" That was a Navy base when I was in. We were Tustin and El Toro.
As we were leaving he said "Semper Fi!"
I was like "what?"
That's my Marine Corps story.

Re: CQ's Military thread
I was a marine stationed on Okinawa. I met an enlisted chick who was stationed on kadena Air Force Base and we would go to her enlisted club. It was like a 4-star hotel restaurant compared to what I was used to on the Marine Corps Base. Her room she shared with one other girl was like a nice motel room with Carpeting and furniture.... while I was living with four snoring assholes on metal bunk beds. I'm pretty sure halfway houses were nicer.... I wonder what problems you'd run into if you cruised around in that showing up at various ports around the world.

Most ports will not allow a nuclear powered or armed vessel anywhere near them.

Yeah, it would be difficult to pop out for cocktails, but really really good at smuggling cocaine.
