Re: Mars Rover landing 3:55pm Eastern
They should have flown it off and crashed it into the Chinese lander.woohooguy wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 9:29 pmIt peeled off to fly away and it crashed some ways away to not interfere or possibly damage the Rover.Animal wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 9:19 pmand so what happened to it? Did it just go crash somewhere or did it go land somewhere for something in the future?CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 8:51 pmYeah, it's the thing that actually lowered the Rover, then flew off. Edit: If you go back and watch the landing video again, right when the Rover lands, for about 1 second they pan up and show the sky crane flying off.

The government should contract with Carnival to design the first Mars ship to book curious travelers. I bet they could get the price point down to around $1200 per adult with an interior room and no view.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 11:03 pmThe Mars tourism industry may never recover.

that might have been a bit anti-climactic. no peegasms were had during the listening to that.

That’s pretty cool. I read that the daytime temperature on the equator on Mars is about 70 so you could walk around in shorts and a t shirt. Until night, then you would freeze to death.

Mars has a thin atmosphere so you still can hear sound. It would probably be much fainter and higher pitch than you would hear e on Earth

Mars has a very thin atmosphere, mostly carbon dioxide. After the core of Mars cooled, it lost its magnetic field and lighter gasses were either stripped or floated away. Being mostly CO2, sounds will not sound the same as on earth. The atmosphere being less dense means sound travels slower, around 500 mph, and it does not carry higher pitched noises very well, so all sounds would "sound" lower.disco.moon wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 6:53 pm

When I read this stuff, I think about technical divers who use helium with their oxygen when deep diving (actually called Trimix-though the stuff that has no nitrogen is apparently called Heliox). They sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks when talking to topside.disco.moon wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 7:17 pmThanks it's really fascinating.woohooguy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 7:10 pmMars has a very thin atmosphere, mostly carbon dioxide. What if you shot a bullet on Mars. Say an AR-15. On earth you chornograph the bullet at 2700 fps. Would that same bullet travel slower on Mars?woohooguy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 7:10 pmMars has a very thin atmosphere, mostly carbon dioxide. You'd think it might travel faster. It sure as hell could travel farther, since there's less air resistance (not to mention the lower gravity too).Animal wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 8:38 pmWhat if you shot a bullet on Mars. Say an AR-15. P.S. Searching, and the gravity seems to be more important (62% less), and mostly on distance of travel

Less atmosphere for resistance less gravity to pull it down to the surface so it would go faster and farther. You would also be able to jump farther as in the documentary John Carter of Mars

Sound is a mechanical wave, which means that it needs substance to travel through, such as air or water.

Re: Mars Rover landing 3:55pm Eastern
My understanding is that temperature has a lot to do with the speed of sound waves...... so it's pretty cold on Mars... hence the speed of sound would be a little slower. I'm sure woohoo guy will come in and set it straight
I blame Biker.
