So, why doesn't sound travel faster on Mars?
Sound is a mechanical wave, which means that it needs substance to travel through, such as air or water.

My understanding is that temperature has a lot to do with the speed of sound waves...... so it's pretty cold on Mars... hence the speed of sound would be a little slower. I'm sure woohoo guy will come in and set it straight
Well, he already said that the atmosphere is less dense, which is why sound travels slower. So the "thicker" the atmosphere the faster sound travels. Kind of the opposite of what you would think.

The atmospheric medium that the sound waves travel through determine how far those sounds will carry....... the temperature will have more effect on the speed of the sound........ that is my armchair Theory and I'm sticking with it

Without some sort of atmosphere, the parachute would have been worthless.

sound may travel farther in colder/denser air but the speed slows down. Sound travels faster in warm air

i am a little mind blown trying to make my brain understand that sound travels MUCH faster through a solid than air. Sound waves can go 6,000 fps in a solid. 1100 fps in air.

for the record, running and sound are different.

Atoms are closer together in a solid, farther apart in air.

That's so sweet. Next time NASA goes to the moon I'm gonna ask them to bring you a big hunk of that green cheese.

Hehe
Don't encourage the lapdog. His idea of a scientific experiment is banging 2 rocks together and see what happens. The math involved just getting the 2 rocks was almost enough to kill the whole thing.

Olympus Mons on Mars (the highest mountain in the solar system) is 3 times higher that Mount Everest. Size comparison

so Mt Everest is measured in feet above sea level. if there are no oceans on Mars, then what reference point do they use for 0 elevation?

That's why the graph is showing both Mt Everest and Mauna Kea for comparison. Both have a claim for the highest mountain on Earth depending on height above sea level or height above base. Both are close to each other but 3 times lower than Olympus Mons. Hope this helps.
