Re: Political meme thread for both sides of the spectrum.
There's actually a lot of truth to this, even with a snarky title like that. Many states and cities around the country used the Interstate system construction to empty out poor and black majority areas. Even in my little 'burb of Orlando, I-4 going through downtown wiped out the eastern edge of the traditionally black area of town and roped its black residents west of it. Incidentally, there was already a distinction between that area and the white downtown area with a road named "Division St" (though that wasn't the original idea). Highway 288 going south from Houston had the tragic action of erasing in the early '70s a whole large black-owned section of town, including the house where Ray Charles lived briefly. It wasn't by accident, it was wholly intentional. "Where da black folks at? Yea, we need a highway going through there."
LA didn't even appreciate its white Jewish residents at one time. And had absolutely no sympathy for its Latino residents, either. Is it such a bad thing to come to recognize that it happened?
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

Or........... it could have been that the highway people look for the cheapest land and the people most willing to sell. Everything doesn't have to be done with a racist intention.

Or many of those older areas just happen to be where infrastructure improvements make sense.
Thirty years ago GM leveled an entire Polish neighborhood to create a new ginormous assembly plant. To this day it is called the Poletown plant. It's right near the convergence of two major interstates in Hamtramck which is a small city inside Detroits borders. As much of a bummer as it was to displace those folks and level the neighborhood that was simply the best location.

Its weird that highway departments and minorities both look for the cheapest property to use. How is that possible?CHEEZY17 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 2:58 pmOr many of those older areas just happen to be where infrastructure improvements make sense.

I suspect it made waves because it was white people. If it were in the hood filled with blacks, it wouldn’t have received much attention back then.spudoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 1:23 pmGo read up on the whole Poletown thing and tell me that it isn’t off the rails fucked up.Biker wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 1:00 pmCompellingspudoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 12:19 pmJust fucking wow.CHEEZY17 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 2:58 pmOr many of those older areas just happen to be where infrastructure improvements make sense.

it might come as a surprise to you, but cities have an obligation to provide for the majority of their residents. And, sometimes, that means they have to make hard decisions that don't sit well for some people in that city. Its called weighing the pros and cons. And doing what is best for the majority. Its how democracies work.spudoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 1:23 pmGo read up on the whole Poletown thing and tell me that it isn’t off the rails fucked up.Biker wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 1:00 pmCompellingspudoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 12:19 pmJust fucking wow.CHEEZY17 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 2:58 pmOr many of those older areas just happen to be where infrastructure improvements make sense.

Eminent domain is a tool that needs to be used sparingly at best and should be for the benefit of the public. Allowing private companies to use it is bullshitAnimal wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 3:45 pmit might come as a surprise to you, but cities have an obligation to provide for the majority of their residents. the city stepped in and did it for the private company because of a thing called property taxes, sales taxes, income to the area, and jobs. you understand how cities make money, right?spudoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 4:42 pmEminent domain is a tool that needs to be used sparingly at best and should be for the benefit of the public.
