Several options:1. go to sales tax only. 2. Flat rate income tax with no deductions. 3. Value Added Tax.Stapes wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 5:14 pmAnd?Antknot wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 5:13 pmThat's not a tax rate problem. Number one will hurt those with less income. Number two will also unless a minimum income level before the tax takes affect is used. Number three has too many steps and places to "fudge" the numbers.
I thing a flat tax with a minimum income before tax applies. Applied to individuals and corporations and the elimination of ALL. other taxes and fees . And the state's should follow suit.

Re: Political meme thread for both sides of the spectrum.
and the problem is that you don't understand the Amazon example you bring up. I don't completely understand it. I know that the reason they paid $0 in income tax was a combination of a few things. Mostly:
1. They carried forward a loss from prior year(s). That's not a loophole. That's a legit thing. If you lose $1 million in profits, you can't get a refund for that, you have to carry it forward to offset earnings in later years. Its sort of like gambling losses. You can't deduct more in gambling losses than gambling winnings. If you lose more than you make, you have to carry them forward to put up against future winnings.
2. They got tax breaks for sinking cash back into R&D. Now, I don't know what that looks like or how it works, because I don't have R&D in my business. But I do buy equipment. Lots of equipment and it costs lots of money. And they money I spend for it helps other companies and employees and the economy as a whole. In exchange for that, the government will let me speed up the depreciation on that equipment. Its not a loophole, it just allows me to depreciate it in the same year that I bought it. I spend $500,000 on equipment, I can take a $500,000 depreciation deduction. Now that equipment is worth $0 on my balance sheet and my taxable income has dropped by $500k. No loophole. No change to taxes in the long run. It just helps in that year. And it incentivizes companies that make BIG profits to spend BIG money before the end of the year.
3. They got some kind of tax deferment for compensating employees with stock options instead of money. I don't understand this one either, but I assume it means the tax is delayed until the employees cash in the stock options.
So, bottom line is that even though it makes a great story for you and your girlfriends to rant about over coffee, its not tax cheating or doing anything illegal. Its cherry picking a tax year and using it as some kind of example to make a trollish point. And it has absolutely nothing to do with what any of your congresswomen are doing to raise taxes right now.

and you still don't understand. they didn't make the tax due on the profit disappear. They either offset it will losses from a prior year or they deferred the payment until later. I know to you these sound like very complex tax strategies that require armies of lawyers and accountants. They are not.Stapes wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 7:58 pm Never said they were cheating El Jefe. there are countless stories on exactly what their tax implications were for the year 2018, which is the year that every one of you trolls pull out when you run this story back up your flagpole of stupidity.Stapes wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:05 pmSure big guy.... GWB had both houses for his first term. He fucked us but good. Unfunded mandates. A war or two. And ballooned the goddamn deficit for no good reason.

Thank God the girl next to him has a hat on. Maybe it served as a line of defense against an unwanted hair sniff.
