I used to go to one near the hills in Bonita/Chula Vista area back in the 90s.

Oceanside, El Cajon/Lakeside had decent ones too back then.

No. On second thought, that's probably not an alligator snapping turtle. The shell doesn't have the pointed things. definitely a snapping turtle of some kind.

shit, i'm not sure now. i was looking at pictures. some have the really spiney shells (like your picture) and some are much more smooth. Its been so long since I have actually seen one. We used to catch them all the time when I was a kid. But I haven't seen one in years. I remember their mouths much more than their shells.

I was trying to help out a Florida turtle that I saw in the road..... now I'm from New Jersey and I'm used to box turtles and you can pick them up and they're not a big deal. Well I didn't know my little Florida Pond Turtle had a very long neck and very sharp claws on his flippers and I picked him up and he reached all the way around and bit my finger. ,, took out a bite sized chunk and now I have a scar.......... on top of that I freaked out and I dropped him on his fucking shell and just left him... Lol

Snappers can reach all the way to their rear legs as well. It doesn't look possible, but they do.

Had a buddy named Ron Stripling growing up and he lost 2 fingers on his left hand to a snapper he hooked while fishing. I kept telling him, "Dude, just cut the line. Fuck the lure!" But he really wanted that lure back. It cost him 2 fingers.

Oh yeah they're all over here in the lake community. Across from me is a swampy marsh and my backyard has a lil sandy area. I missed when the eggs hatched though

They have a pretty cool thing down here every year on Padre Island. There and some beaches in Northern Mexico are the hatching sites for the critically endangered Ridley turtles. They return years later to the exact beaches they were hatched at. Too bad humans have to be involved but volunteers are on hand to protect the females when they climb out of the ocean and lay their eggs in the dunes. Same weeks/months later when thousands of baby hatchlings make the march to the surf. Trying to give the species a chance.

The one you went to near Chula Vista was technically in National City I think. Mine is down near I.B. The actor Mathew Modine's parents own it.

The one you went to near Chula Vista was technically in National City I think. Mine is down near I.B. The actor Mathew Modine's parents own it.

Could have been NC. I lived in OB/PL at the time and my neighbor was a big fan of drive ins. Went with her a few times.

That's pretty cool, Modine has always been one of my favorite actors.
