those pipes are threaded. and the chain is wrapped around so that when the chain is pulled it spins the pipe to thread in the next joint. like winding a string around a top to spin it.

Yeah, I just haven't seen it for a few years around here. Also seems like they stopped vertically stacking the pipe in the rack attached to the rig. Not sure

Actually, the video you showed was probably a low ball workover rig somewhere. The wife beater T-shirt was the clue. Almost every modern rig is automated as much as possible (workers aren't slinging chains or dodging rotating tongs) and require they wear full Nomex suits along with other safety measures.
