Wordle as a game of information theory, and that "crane" is the best first guess based on the math.
Also I didn't know there are *two* lists of words: one is the list of all possible allowed guesses, and a subset of that list of actual final answer words, 12972 guess words (many of which played in Scrabble might get you a bloody nose) against 2315 final answer words.

my word earlier was "squad". My first guess was "POISE". Got one "S" but out of place.
Then guessed "STARK". Got "S" in the right place but "A" in wrong place.
Then I was thinking that U is the only vowel left, but a u won't come before the A, so I guessed "SAUNA". Got the "S" and "U" right, and "A" in wrong place.
That only left one place for A. So the word was "S_UA_". So, I thought maybe it had a Q before the U and then started trying to think of words "SQUA_". I almost typed "SQUAB" when it dawned on me "SQUAD". its weird how words seem so hard to think up until the light bulb goes off and then you wonder how you overlooked that option.

All of that said to say that words with "Q" are tough.

fuck, just had the word "WITCH". Damn, that one was hard. I went to the last guess. My try right before the last was "BITCH". I'm glad I had already tried a D earlier or I would have lost my first game.

humph would probably cost me a game for several reasons. one it has two "h"s and the only vowel is a "u". Plus I have never once in my life heard that word.
