Animal wrote: Wed Mar 16, 2022 12:16 am i think if there was an easy solution to keeping deer out of edible plants, everyone would know what it is by now. wolf piss, coyote piss, etc are about the only things i have heard that work.

personally, i would probably go with some kind of motion sensor set up. lights at night or sprinklers or noises, etc. almost any animal i have ever been around will get fooled a few times and then figure it out and not be deterred by whatever it is. Fences are the only thing I know work.
Most of these deer are desensitized from all that. They spend their time around town and there are a number of people who go out of their way to feed them.
well, if its any consolation, i have a hunting ranch and if i plant a pepper plant and leave it unattended for a night it will be eaten to the roots the next morning. I planted some fruit trees and within a few weeks they had eaten them down to a stem. i have no idea how they find fresh growth, but they can sense that shit from miles away.
I'm thinking motion sensor paintball machine guns.

If you’re ready for almost five minutes of Automated Sentry mayhem, then check out this video. It shows the Automated Sentry taking out pedestrians, runners, bikers, jeep drivers and even a guy bouncing between two trampolines:

Holy shit. Get one of those, hook it up to a real gun, put it inside your front door and never worry about burglars again.

The wifey and I sold the house and downsized 10 years ago. To this day the only thing I miss about having that house was being able to grow my own Beefsteak tomatoes.

My tomato of choice. It's a real good tomato when one slice makes a sandwich.

And Beefsteak tomato soup is a cut above ordinary. 8-)

Anybody here do composting?

Been giving it serious thought. Lately I've started drying and crushing banana peels to make a potassium rich fertilizer. Also crushing egg shells.

My wife does, she has one of those small composting barrels from Aldi's she stuffs with all sorts of bio-garbage. It's just the two of us, we don't really throw out that much that's not in the form of poop. But whoa! to me if she ruffles thru the kitchen garbage and finds something that should go into that barrel. Typically when I cook now I have a bowl nearby that I put all the leftovers, and then she pokes thru it for the useful stuff.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.
