just curious?

August 16th is almost here, and I'm thinking most people, regardless where you were on earth, if you were old enough then to understand/read what ever language you spoke, do you remember what happened August 16th, 1977? Don't bother to say what happened and don't internet search for it, just a rough experiment, but I would "go out on a limb" and say nearly everyone alive then, as long as they could read/speak their language, in every civilized area of the world probably knew what happened that day. Many people would have forgotten by now, but I think once reminded nearly everyone would say "Oh yeah I was ...." and then go on to share their experience of that day. Lets have some fun with it and please , no cheating. J-Bird passes the stick....

He did.

I only know because my sister had the same birthday, Jan 8.

That day I was with my mom and brother, we were spending a few days with an old friend of hers at a cabin near Lake Mille Lacs.

There was this great rope swing hanging from a huge tree. It wasn't over water like most, but instead just on a hill side. So, you didn't drop off. You'd run out and swing out around the tree and land on the opposite side. Super fun. Well my brother and I were fighting over who's turn it was so we ended up going together..or at least started together. He pushed me off near the apex, and I fell quite a ways and landed on some rocks and split my forehead wide open.

We were in the ER for a while I was getting stitched up. When we got back to the cabin, my mom's friend was getting me situated on the couch and my mom starts sobbing uncontrollably. I got freaked out, thinking there was something wrong with the stitches. Nope, the King had died.

When ever folks ask about the scar on my forehead - I tell the story that it happened the day Elvis passed.

yeah for me I was 14 at the time, i was a "tribute artist" before the word was invented. But my buddy down the street called me and said his grandma says on tv there is a special report that Elvis was found dead so I turn on the tv and every station was special news report. I even talked to my wifes aunt an uncle about it when I met them in the Phillippines and they said even over there they remembered when he died. It would be interesting, I think if there still was no internet and all the now famous performers only performed in the United states, I bet no one would even come close to Elvis. It was pretty much a one off deal. Now the industry is so f'ed up, when you have an ex stripper that used to drug customers and steal their credit cards and win grammy for a song called wet ass pussy. Truly "dumbing down of america". No instruments on the stage at a concert etc etc. yes I'm old.

I was in the Sea Scouts then, our ship (troop) was taking some long excursions for practice maneuvers that week out on Galveston Bay, and my dad and another father took that week off to escort us around. They just stayed at the beach camp we set up, drank beer, and listened to the radio while we were out being obnoxious teenage twits sailing around one last time before high school started up again. So we came back to our camp in the afternoon, and Dad and the other father looked kind of weird, not drunk, but like something really bad happened. Our skipper (troop leader) asked what was wrong, and they said "Elvis died". Our skipper looked sad and then asked us how we felt, "one of all-time great singers has moved on, end of an era..." sort of shit, and then "how do you feel about it?" The amount of concern and thought we gave the idea of Elvis being dead was not a whole lot. And by not a whole lot I mean a molecule or two of H2O from an Olympic pool amount of not a whole lot. We just wanted to get back out on the bay. Who the fuck was Elvis was mostly our general thought on the subject. We had a rough notion, but he didn't mean a thing to us at the time. Some fat douche who sang in Vegas.

A few days later we broke down camp, stowed our gear, and drove home. Dad and the other father tried to sing Elvis songs (badly) to get us interested. Didn't work. And it didn't help that Elvis and his life and music were all over the radio and TV for at least a month afterwards.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

You couldn't wait 5 days to post this as a "On this Day in 1977...." thread?
