It seems God does hate Florida

I won't deny, even as a non-believer. It brings to mind how many evangelical preachers loved to ramble on on how hurricanes and other natural disasters are a "sign from God" about all sorts of social behaviors and his displeasure with them. So why is God punishing all the coastal red states so much, especially Florida? Gee, what the hell is he so pissed off at us for?

This storm has the real potential of turning Tampa-St Pete area into the new New Orleans during/after Katrina, while dragging a large swath between there and the east coast into oblivion. So if you don't hear from me Thursday afternoon, well, might not have gone so well for us here.

Actually still bad, but now they are predicting a downgrade to Cat 3. Storm surge is expected to be brutal though.

Yeah, only a Cat 3. That's only going to be about as bad as an F3 tornado that's 100 miles wide.

Well, for a tornado, the difference between 350MPH winds and 200 may be enough to save something on your body that normally sticks out.

Yea, in (actually a bit west of) Orlando. I'm scared, but I can't leave. So whatever happens this evening and tomorrow morning is what will happen and there is little I can do about it other than deal with the consequences. If my house if going to be leveled, I'd rather be here for it than come back to it that way. Some of my co-workers (and good friends) in Tampa-St Pete are facing that, it breaks my heart. We've been through hurricanes before, and as long as we're here we'll live with more to come. That's the real price of life here in Florida, has been long before the state was being sold of in little slices of paradise. We usually have mild winters, which is a plus. But we have potential horrible hurricanes in the summer and fall. Not dealing with them means not living here, or even practically anywhere along the Gulf and East coasts.

And no house is truly safe. It always surprises me when my little ramshackle shack, built in wood frame by a couple of guys who "knew" how to build a house in the mid 40's, survives quite well when million-dollar mansions up the road in the "good" neighborhoods are torn up all to shit. Many of the houses around me do well, and most are in worse shape, structurally. It is my hope our tiny crib lives up to it again.

I'll visit here once in a while, at least until power gives out, something that will most certainly happen.

I don't wish bad on others, but I would also wish it could continue pathing south and missing us almost entirely.

The hurricane has sucked the canals dry around here which is a good sign, I expect it to continue raining through the night.

i just saw where it has turned just a little back north, closer to orlando than they were saying this morning. It looks like you are going to get 75 to 100 mph winds and around 6 inches to a foot of rain. I don't think I would do well in a hurricane. I'm not good at anticipation of problems. If you are safe from flooding, just hide from the wind and you should be okay by daylight.
