Sounds like JD and Pete really dislike Europe and footing the bill for our allies interests (except Israel of course). They think we should get paid for keeping the shipping lanes open. I wonder if they would be happy with some "thank yous" and well worded tweets about their awesomeness..
So if we take a look at the chat, Vance says (IIRC) that we ship about 4% of our stuff through there while Europe's percentage is WAY higher. I think his point is this: why are WE fixing this problem when it obviously benefits Europe the most? Why aren't THEY fixing it?
I mean really, isn't that a legit question?
You are right, I only read the snippit of JD's Europe angle on an article earlier.

Now after reading the entire transcript, it seems like JD was actually being the voice of reason and voting to delay this attack and saying there was no urgency because the closed shipping lanes hurt Europe more than us. He then says it would be against the President's message regarding Europe (most likely that they need to pay more of their own defense and that the US is not obligated to help allies unless it wants to i.e. Ukraine).

He is backed up partially by the Director of the CIA and Chief of Staff who says waiting won't change anything but make it a more fruitful strike and of the Director of National Intelligence who's only objection is that Israel will probably make the strikes first and will want us to replensh the weapons they use.

He is quickly overridden by Pete the Lush and Mike Waltz who actually contradict each other.

Pete says that the message needs to be to blame Biden and Iran (even though the shipping lanes are being targeted becuaseof Israel's actions in Gaza) and that waiting will not change the fact that if they don't strike they risk a leak (oops) and Israel striking first.

Waltz then disputes JD's numbers on US dependence on Suez and then says that no one but the US can make this strike (I guess he didn't get the memo on Israel). Waltz also makes up some bullshit of how they are going to levy the Eurpeans for the cost of the military operations (per Trump's request). Obviously to appease JD's main concern which is bearing the cost of European protection.

Then they decided to go ahead and strike, say some prayers (or at least used the emoji) and proceeded to celebrate a possible war crime that JD labled as "Excellent".

Oh and the ships are still mostly being rerouted and now the US is ramping up for more military action and moving assets to the region. Seems like it would make more sense for the US to pressure Bibi back into a ceasfire (like doing with Ukraine) to de-esculate the Houthi attacks on ships. If Trump was really more worried more about the US cost/benefits and not what Israel wants us to do.

I'd be OK with Waltz taking the fall here. When it gets down to it I believe he, or one of his staffers most likely, set up the chat. I think a part of this is also to show some US strength. It doesn't really cost us all that much militarily or politically.
