Lance Cpl. Chase Welch yells to his team between firing burst from his M-249 SAW during a firefight with the Taliban in city of Marjah, Afghanistan, February 2010. U.S. Marines and Afghan forces continued Operation Moshtarak, meaning “joint operation,” to retake the city of Marja from Taliban forces.

The operation was the largest of war since the invasion, and Marja — long outside of Afghan Government control — was the Taliban’s last major stronghold in Helmand Province.

Assault Breaching Vehicles crossed the heavily IED’s outskirts of the city, using Mine Clearing Line Charges (MICLIC), 150m 1750 lbs cables of C4 explosive that detonate, and clear a path of IED’s and other obstacles in the process. Marines of Charlie Company 1 Infantry, 6th Marine Regiment will follow, clearing the city of Taliban insurgents.

March 13th is National K9 Veterans Day!

On March 13, 1942, the U.S. Army began training for its new War Dog Program, also known as the "K-9 Corps," marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The rest, as they say, is history. Officially a part of the service or not, the dogs of war span centuries and include such heroes as Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog; Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II; Lex, who retired with his fallen owners family; and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid.

The USS Ranger (CV-4) is the first US Navy aircraft carrier designed and built for this role. It was the only one of its class.

On this day, April 21 in 1836, REMEMBER THE ALAMO - The Battle of San Jacinto, was fought in present-day Harris County, Texas. It was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the Texian Army engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s Mexican army in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes.

Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, was captured and surrendered the following day and held as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country.

Could’ve been on the submarine. But I don’t see any tracks leading from either of the towers.

I know.

There is either a 3rd part of the sub that pokes out of the ice that he came from or the guy was already there at some camp and walked to this location.

The object in the foreground isn't a tower, it's the rear vertical stabilizer fin. Think like the rear stabilizer on a plane.

And I was thinking that the shot was taken using a drone.

Never considered a drone. I sort of assumed it was an older photo. I stand corrected about the tail fin. Thanks.

i think that picture was taken in 1999. Probably not from a drone, but it might be possible. Sorry, that pic was taken in 1985. Couldn't have been by a drone.

That guy must've wanted that picture pretty bad!

And 85 is when I joined the Navy, and I was 1" too tall to be a submariner.

General Patton’s Colt .45 Model 1873 Single Action Revolver

It was one of his two revolvers. As to the question of why he carried two revolvers, rather than just one, it is well known that as a young man he was part of General Pershing’s “Punitive Expedition” into Mexico to hunt down the infamous Pancho Villa. And, on 14 May, 1914, during one of those expeditionary forays, he came under fire while leading a caravan of three vehicles to obtain food for his troops. The band of “Villistas” attempted to flee on horseback. Patton was armed with his own Colt SAA .45 revolver. Back then he carried it with the hammer down on an empty chamber, hence only five rounds.

During the firefight he emptied the weapon, some believe three times. In a subsequent letter to his father, Patton wrote, “I fired five times with my new pistol and one of them ducked back into the house. I found out later that this was Cardenes and that I had hit both he and his horse.” Captain Julio Cardenes was a member of the Pancho Villa gang of thugs, and was second in command, when he was shot by then Lieutenant George S. Patton. Patton then carved a notch in his revolver’s handgrips, and removed Cardenes’ spurs as souvenirs.

On May 20, 1969, after enduring a brutal 10-day battle, members of the 101st Airborne Division finally get a chance to rest on top of Hamburger Hill.

During the 10-day battle, U.S. losses totaled 72 killed and 372 wounded. To take the position, the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) eventually committed five infantry battalions and ten batteries of artillery. In addition, the US Air Force flew 272 missions and expended more than 500 tons of ordnance.

Estimates of the losses incurred by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) included 630 dead (bodies discovered on and around the battlefield); including many found in makeshift mortuaries within the tunnel complex. There is no count of the NVA running off the mountain, those killed by artillery and air strikes, the wounded and dead carried into Laos, or the dead buried in collapsed bunkers and tunnels. During the ten-day battle, US forces captured 89 individual weapons and 22 crew‑served weapons.

wasn't hamburger hill the piece of land they fought so hard to take and then just gave it back. like a complete waste of time? Well, other than pointing out how the entire war was a waste of time. maybe that's a good outcome.

Wikipedia wrote:The Battle of Hamburger Hill (13–20 May 1969) was fought by US Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) forces against People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces during Operation Apache Snow of the Vietnam War. Though the heavily-fortified Hill 937, a ridge of the mountain Dong Ap Bia in central Vietnam near its western border with Laos, had little strategic value, US command ordered its capture by a frontal assault, only to abandon it soon thereafter. The action caused a controversy among both the US armed services and the public back home, and marked a turning point in the U.S. involvement.

When Hitler first saw the Me 262 in November 1943, he asked Willy Messerschmitt if it could bomb. Messerschmitt lied and said yes, then scrambled to make it true. Whether this delayed the jet’s deployment is debatable, but the result was a very short-range, very inaccurate fighter-bomber that had no impact on the battles to come.
