Anyone have a metal roof on their house?...

Or at least a non asphalt shingle roof? If so, has it worked out well? Just looking for your thoughts...

My wife and I are considering a metal roof on our little Florida cracker shack. It's an older house, built in the 40's, and has survived a lot of hurricanes and general bad weather pretty well. But the roof as a whole is past 20 years now, and is a traditional asphalt shingle roof. About half of it was replaced about 10 years ago, along with the asphalt flat area in the back. A rep with a metal roof installer has quoted us about $1500 to $2000 more than the quotes for asphalt shingles, mostly due to the metal shingle cost. But also gave us a nice "over 75" discount due to my wife's age, along with another discount if we take up the offer in the next 60 days. Basically coming out just a bit more with metal over asphalt.

Is a metal roof quiet during a rain storm? Have there been any structural issues with the roof? Do you have solar panels, is that any issue?

Side note: here in Florida, insurance companies have gone into requiring new roofs at owner's cost about every 10 to 15 years, and several will actually drop customers over it. Then the next insurer won't pick up the property until the roof is replaced. We're getting into hurricane season, though. The metal roof rep said our roof looked in pretty good shape, but can tell it's not going to last too many more years, as the other roofers have said. Of course, they want to sell us a new roof, and I'm pretty sure we need it, sooner than later.

yeah,FL insurance is a reason to pick your pocket over a roof. They tried that 'we will cancel you' cause your roof is over 10 yrs old. i hired a state inspector that said roof has 15 more yrs left. I own my place so I said cancel me, I dont care. They never said another word.
About metal roof, do you want to spend extra $2k-3k for a roof that will out last you ? Good Corning shingles will 30 yrs .Metal roof is not any more noisy in rain to notice inside the house. Last hurricane in 2017 lifted several metal panels from my neighbors roof where as a few shingles folded over on my roof. Mounting solar will penetrate the metal roof and MAY void the warranty. That's a warranty question for a contractor.

my house needs shingles and I asked about metal roof and he said the problem with them is if you put holes in it like to mount a tv antenna, you then end up with problems eventually, He also said they were noisy. When he builr my pole barn he said the meatl roof would be noisy and he liked shingles. He also said shingle cost 3 times more than they used to because the old kind caused cancer and they quit making them. So my broke ass has that to look forward to.

metal roof's make getting a cellphone signal inside the house really bad. Other than that they are okay. Go to a house with a metal roof and test your phone signal from inside.

My 2 cents. I would go with a class 4 high impact asphalt shingle from a very reputable manufacturer. And roofers are one of the most corrupt businesses that exist. Do your homework on the company you hire.

yeah my buddy down the street has a small home and he needed the plywood or whatever under the shingles also replaced and first company said 24000 "and we can finance that for you" so he asked how about if I just pay cash "it's still 24000 but we can finance it for you" so he called another outfit and it was 14000 so he went with that and he's been happy with it, he did shingles. My sisters friend got an estimate on their home and it was 60000 and my sister said their house isn't all that big. It does seem like there are scammers out there.
