Compared to what? Lol. That number means absolutely nothing.
Total number of infections divided by total number of deaths. This is based on world wide totals.
Absolutely meaningless number. mortality rates changed all over the place depending on location and age. Some cities in China had 14% mortality rate and another city had 0.4. United States hasnt even got test kits out there yet, you don't know who's infected.
They are overreacting because they don't want all these hospitals shut down and overwhelmed by too many people at once. Yeah probably South Dakota isn't going to have a problem that doesn't mean there isn't a problem
Guess what? I got the Chronic Complainer Virus at last two times already & so far I'm disease free. Now let's open up the strip clubs again so I can have a good time.

Fuck this shit then, why are global markets shutting down then? There will be many more deaths due to people not able to pay their bills and basically starving to death. Let's open the schools back up and go back to work & like Biker & BRR said, fuck these old people, they never had our backs to begin with. Meanwhile, I'm pretty old & I'm still saying that.

Last I heard, our congresscritters from both parties are working together hard including this weekend to deal with an issue that folks here seem to not take all that seriously or are turning it into just another opportunity to bash the "other party."

Heck, even Trump seems to be taking this seriously. Two whole weeks without golf! ;)

BTW, I was very impressed with the speech by the Governor of Kentucky regarding his State's coronavirus situation. Wouldn't be surprised if he tries for national office.

I think you forgot to multiply by 100 to convert to percentage.

Might really be 4.2%. spanish flu has a ~2% mortality rate. We did nothing. 30 million died.

13,000 deaths. 306,000 cases of people seeking medical help and testing positive.

That's 4.2% mortality rate for people seeking medical help from covid

Influenza saw 20million people feel sick enough they went and got tested. 60,000 died, in the USA last year. 43milliom total estimated cases.

That's a 0.3% mortality rate for influenza of people who felt sick enough to see a Dr, tested positive and died.

That makes covid 14times more deadly for people showing symptoms as compared to influenza.

Much ado about nothing. This is being over hyped like nothing I have ever seen in my life.
Even republicans are starting to come around to the reality on this, have you seen what's going on in Italy? That is what happens when the number of cases needing respirators exceeds the number of respirators. They have doctors triaging who is going to get a life saving treatment and who is going to die. Exactly the same thing will happen there without the extreme measures to reduce the number of new cases.

That is pretty sad. If anything we should be following what the Chinese did to be successful in combating this virus.

Liquor stores by me (NJ) are only doing curbside delivery w/a $50 minimum order since we're on lockdown. They're gonna make a mint I bet.

That was my thought before reading up on their response to the outbreak. And while they should be lauded for shutting everything down and trying to contain once they did take it seriously, the Chinese definitely tried to cover this up early on and hope it wasn't as bad as some doctors were thinking. They went so far as to detain the original doctor that told his facebook group about it. They threatened him with jail for spreading rumors (he ended up dying from the virus in early Feb). They slowplayed this at the beginning for at least 3 weeks.

I have been watching Gov. Cuomo the past couple days. It is a breath of fresh air to see a politician who has a command of the facts and can convey his thoughts in a straight forward and comprehensive manner. What is going on, what we should expect, what we need to do and why we need to do it. No stumbling over words from a teleprompter, no straying off topic into petty grievances and false public relations spin. Forget Dem or Repub ,it's nice to see what leadership looks like.

If you go by the number of cases that have had an outcome, the mortality rate is 12%.

Agreed. Hopefully it isn't just a "moment" like it appears to have been when Rudy did the same thing after 9/11.

People say they want a leader that "gives it to them straight"!

Here he is, and there's no chance in hell he'd ever get elected. Because he'd give you what you say you want. But what you really want is lies.

P.S. I watched the Governor of Kentucky, and was also impressed by how he handled it. Wouldn't be surprised if we hear from him on the national stage soon too.
