Flumper wrote: Wed Apr 08, 2020 3:11 pm Well, yesterday sort of sucked.

New York somehow snuck in another 4,000 cases of the virus after Cuomo's early announcement of how great everything was doing. They haven't started another trend up, but without some other explanation of why their cases would have jumped so much in one day its alarming.

Georgia went through the roof yesterday. I think its due to Atlanta. You can look at a map of georgia and where the infections are and they are all tightly clustered in one big location. Their cases jumped over 20% yesterday.

The only other states with exceptionally bad numbers yesterday was Delaware (15.6% jump) and West Virginia (16.3% jump).

I did learn one thing yesterday, some of these states are receiving testing data from weeks ago. Like 3 weeks ago. Some of the old testing procedures were so bad that the patients would be recovered and home from the hospital before they ever get the test results back showing them positive. So, as those results come in the states report them.

Italy had its best day so far with only 3,000 new cases yesterday. That is amazing.

The world death toll jumped huge yesterday, though. Biggest one day increase with 7,380 deaths in one day. Honestly, that number is more to be expected than the drop we had seen.

The real concern now that this virus has pretty much spread over the entire country is how the inner cities control it and contain it. The charts and growth of the virus now is going to depend on how they react.

I read a little townie Facebook page that the locals post on.......most of the ones who are being tested are waiting 14 days to get their information back.
I blame Biker.

This is a real issue in the black community, as they are not adhering to the lockdown.

Well, what I read was that the "old" tests, the ones we started with a month ago (or whenever it was, basically around first of march) had a really slow turn around. I'm not sure it was so much the fault in the test as much as it was the extremely slow turnaround from the lab that turned around the information.

BUT, these tests they are using now (assuming some of the cities aren't still using the old ones) are on the spot tests with results in less than 15 minutes and no labs. so no excuses moving forward. at least there shouldn't be.

And now its Maryland jumping on the case count band wagon. They had 4,371 cases yesterday and now, TODAY, they are already reporting 1,158 new cases for the day. That is just statistically impossible. They reported 326 yesterday.

Ugggggh!!!

That brings up an interesting point. Each year they track the number of people that died from the flu. From what I am reading, the number of deaths from the flu are WAY down this year, mostly over the past month or so.

so way less people are dying of the flu and floods of people are dying of COVID. Makes you wonder a little.

This was the flu last year (2018-2019) for the US. I can't paste a table, so this is just the summary.

Table 1: Estimated influenza disease burden, by age group — United States, 2018-2019 influenza season

Symptomatic Illnesses 35,520,883
Medical Visits 16,520,350
Hospitalizations 490,561
Deaths 34,157

The new coronavirus causing COVID-19 has led to more than 454,000 illnesses and more than 20,550 deaths worldwide. For comparison, in the U.S. alone, the flu (also called influenza) has caused an estimated 38 million illnesses, 390,000 hospitalizations and 23,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

well, that data certainly looks extremely old (COVID time frame old, like days or weeks old).

454,000 illnesses and 20,550 deaths worldwide?

try 1,414,000 illnesses and 81,200 deaths worldwide.

It was more of a comparison thing to the actual flu as I think there is a lot of overlap going on with the numbers.

We'll be lucky to have this produced before the end of the year then.

At least it looks like they may beat the 1 to 1.5 year prediction, but not by much.

Part of the problem we are having with this "Virus" is that we have to rely on doctors for advice. Advice on what to wear (gloves, mask). Advice on how to act (stay inside, don't work, 6 feet distance, wash hands, etc.). Advice on medications to take.

One thing that I have learned on this, if you ask a doctor how to change the channel on a tv, he will hand you the owner's manual on every television on earth.

they just don't know how to wing it when the situation is something they don't fully understand.

Yeah, you should follow the advice of the Orange Messiah, whose source for this "knowledge" is often extracted from his anal orifice, or Dr. Oz. Not sure which one of those sources is more dependable, though.

or should i follow the advice of the guy on CNN the other night that said we should shut down and shelter in place for 18 months until a vaccine is in place and the virus is eradicated?

Well, the human race starving to death will certainly get rid of the virus, in humans at least.

P.S. But "winging it" seems like horrible advice, regardless.

Had this argument locally. Guy on the news had a meltdown that everything should be closed for 2 weeks including the grocery stores. Guy casually commented that if people are starving they'll certainly care less about getting the virus! Problem solved.

i'm talking about using some common sense on some things. it has "seemed" like a good idea for a month now to wear a mask. But everyone said "no, a mask will kill you faster than anything". Or that's basically what they said. It was like this nervous tic to jump down your throat if you mentioned wearing a mask and especially if you said you might use a scarf or t shirt as a mask.

finally common sense prevailed.

that same common sense will prevail when they start letting some people go back to work. As if a florist is more subjected to a virus at work than at home or going to the freaking grocery store.
