Used to work on projects like this and used brute force many times (way beyond me now) but the only problem is people use the same password for everything. So if you use the password for a pizza app as you do your credit card or bank then most real financial hackers just try to gain access to easier things like pizza servers and such.

My company mandates 10 character passwords with at least one lower case, one upper case, one number, and one special character. I tend to use a small passphrase with all my corporate passwords, append the program I'm logging into, and end with a number that gets changed with each password update. That's what trips me up, that damn number. Is it 4, or 04, or 004? Despite my best efforts I wind up having to update a password to get on when I keep forgetting the damn things.
Passwords aren't really the problem at my company, it's the spam links people like to click on, even though we mandate a couple rounds of training every year so they'll think twice before clicking. Still, some don't...
