Back to a discussion about real world problems.
Why is the U.S. so far behind many other countries in making testing kits?
We've got a gazillion pharmaceutical companies, and a quadrillion testing labs, and we're behind a lot of other countries?
P.S. Hanks got tested free immediately. At the time his reasons for getting tested would probably not qualify for testing with the U.S.'s limited supply of testing equipment.

South Korea, for example, has tested more than 140,000 people and has even set up drive-though testing stations for people to access. So far, the Trump administration’s promises to increase testing have fallen flat.

i just watched a video clip of a woman (on CNN website). Anyway, she lives in Washington, looked around 40 yo, and she got Coronavirus. She didn't know she had it, just was aching and fever, etc. She went home. Had 101 fever and went to bed. Woke up with 103 fever and slept it off. Later she talked to friends that had all gone to the same party and they all got it. Some were tested with coronavirus. She said it wasn't really much of anything and she really just felt like she had the normal flu. Her message was for people not to panic. Its not that big of a deal.FSchmertz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 5:13 pm Back to a discussion about real world problems.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/06/heal ... virus.htmlOver the past few days, Vice President Mike Pence has been moderating expectations about how quickly the tests would be widely available. On Friday, Mr. Pence said it would be a “matter of weeks” before Americans could get easy access to a coronavirus test.
My information is faulty? So you disagree with Pence?“We’re going to need millions and millions and millions of tests,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in a CNN town hall Thursday.

Just to build on this without being alarmist but just looking at it rationally. We are using this lady as an example......her symptoms made her feel like she had a "normal" flu. The flu wasn't too horrible this year but killed 80,000 in the 2018 season. The Whitehouse says the mortality rate of Covid-19 is 1% or 10x more lethal than the flu. I don't believe their numbers because they don't have enough testing Data to make those claims so I will put it at 2% to be on the low side, or 20x more lethal.
If the Covid-19 ever starts infecting the same number of people as the flu your looking at a Million and half people dying just in the US alone on paper.
So the "its just like the flu" argument has a lot of problems. It's "potential" is devastating.
I blame Biker.

If you do the WHO test, nobody is sure of the rate of false positives and negatives (which is very dangerous) and in the US if you test positive with it you have to go through the CDC test anyway. The problem is the US can only process about 1,000 kits per day.
So when someone says they were tested, they got the WHO test most likely. The CDC test takes days to come back with a result.
Washington University in St Louis is working to hand over a massive lab to the CDC to process the test kits but it can only do about 30 per day.

Friend of mine is a pharma rep for an auto-immune drug. He said they announced a massive pay raise that goes into effect in May which he has taken to mean everyone will be laid off in April. He said every auto-immune specialist has closed their offices to anyone but very specific patients so he has nothing to do. He said they are working 18 hour days (the doctors) trying to calm their patients.

The way it was described to me is it is like HIV 2.0. Remember back in the day when AIDS first hit the scene, everyone was thinking you could get AIDS from sitting on toilet seats and contact with surfaces? That was all unfounded fear because HIV cannot survive very long outside of the body. This advanced strain of coronavirus is on a whole different level. It can transmit through the air and it can live on surfaces for an extended period of time.beagleboy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 6:31 pmFriend of mine is a pharma rep for an auto-immune drug. I don't know that part of it yet....sounds very interesting......I did hear that in China and other places they are using HIV drugs to combat it. Protease Inhibitors I believe. From what I've read, we should expect this to be 90% gone in a month and return in September. Hopefully there will be a test / vaccine at that point.

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus
Can't find the article I saw earlier. I suppose it's possible it said they are considering temporarily suspending liquor licenses for DC bars to prevent people from doing bar crawls for St Patty's day. My apologies
Virginia just closed schools till April 1st and some districts have already closed them until April 14.
And I can confirm that Trump just declared a National State of Emergency. I believe that makes social gatherings of more than 300 people illegal now.
