Alcohol consumption back then was off the charts. You forget it was almost 100 years before the nature of microbes was understood. Water, milk being unpasteurized could cause dysentery and other water born diseases. Alcohol prevented that and was drunk pretty much all day long.

I suppose I could get behind the claim if it was like an all day affair or there were also some unaccounted for guests there as well (friendly women). I just can't imagine 1 dude polishing off 2 full bottles of wine, a shot, a mug of beer and then polish that off with hard cider and alcoholic punch. Seriously though, I know they didn't didn't drink alcohol all day but they understood "germ theory" 100 years before it was discovered and knew the water needed to be boiled, so probably a lot of fruit ciders and things like that.
