It’d be nice if an employee or two actually came out and said he resents standing up for groomers.

it sounds to me like its going to fuck over the two counties involved more than Disney. Maybe DeSantis is trying to punish the counties.
I don't like it one bit. It's an awful precedent to set

it reminds me of a Chris Christy move.
States have to be a little careful with Governors that are using their state as a platform to mount a presidential run.

Florida taxpayers are going to L-O-V-E footing the debt bill that would come with this.

A bunch of employees from all the area theme parks have been arrested for pedo crimes, not just Disney. WDW actually has a pretty thorough HR dept ("cast development"), so pedo's normally don't get hired, just fired for it afterwards. By the way, quite a few police officers have also been arrested for pedo crimes.

Despite trying to "punish" Disney, it does more of a big job of punishing Orange and Osceola counties for going with Gillum, which narrowed DeSantis' (aka DeathSantis) election margin by just barely. That's unlike other surrounding counties that were definitely more red (Lake, Seminole, Brevard, etc). They won't feel this at all.
Here's some background, if you're interested:
https://www.wftv.com/news/local/heres-w ... XT7UC4X4KA
https://www.wftv.com/news/local/end-ree ... 3DQ3ZHEZYA
https://fortune.com/2022/04/22/disney-m ... lation/amp
Essentially, DeSantis just dropped all of Disney's debt and tax load onto mostly Orange County, and less on Osceola County. The Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) was basically a carve-out so Disney could run its own development at a time that Orange (and Osceola) County really could not assist in building the parks' infrastructure. It gives Disney their own "quasi-county" powers, and much of the district's budget comes from taxing their own corporation. Without the district, that now falls on mostly Orange County, putting a major crunch on the county's budget. If this all stays by June of next year.
Which it may not. There are at least two ways this may work out. Instead of a state initiated special district, Disney may negotiate pretty much the same deal with Orange and Osceola, keeping the district in place. This route assumes that the state may not come along and try to legislate such a deal out. Which means the state and counties having to hash it all out in court, and who knows how the judge may rule. Desantis and the state congress haven't hesitated to prevent local control of things that cities and counties have wanted when it offends his and the congress' fe-fe's. A healthy bit of the state's budget has been wasted on trying to defend obviously unconstitutional legislation under both Desantis and the previous governor, Rick Scott. Those lawyers ain't cheap!
The other route is that is is all forgotten about by the time the district is supposed to be dissolved. Disney and Desantis kiss and make up, and everything stays the way it is now. There are 13 months to go, it took only a few weeks to make this law, it can take even less time to reverse it. We have a lot of things wrong in our state, and neither him or they seem to worry about taking any time to try to come up with legislation that has no real positive effect on our state's population. But they can certainly blow time on this sort of non-sense in double-step when it suits.
But make no mistake: this is a definite tax increase on the shoulders of the residents of these two counties. If it stays, I may see as much as a 25% increase in my property taxes to account for Disney's debt load. Desantis just lost any claim that Republicans do not raise taxes. They have not only possibly raised my property taxes, but they have also increased fees (ie taxes) on a number of state functions. Florida is not that cheap to live in any more, in general our cost of living has expanded a lot since the Republicans have taken over our representation twenty-something years ago.

Wouldn't Disney's tax obligations cover these expenses?

Nope. There is almost a billion dollars in debt that Disney holds, and it gets all assumed by Orange and Osceola counties, every dime of it. Last year, Orange County only got $40 million on total property taxes, while Disney is allowed to tax itself for over $100 million to pay for a variety of things in the special district, including that debt. It turns out that the district is almost always a loss of Disney, but its total corporate revenues are enough that the loss is a mere blip on their cash flow sheets. The district shields Disney from paying normal sales taxes that the county would get a chunk of (like Universal and SeaWorld pay), but it would still only amount to a paltry handful. That debt, if it really does come into play next year, could easily ravage Orange County's revenues and put an economic hurt on anyone who lives in this county.
DeSantis and his cronies carefully coordinated this to look like they were only cancelling certain special districts that were formed before the current state constitution, effectively killing not just Disney's district, but a few other minor districts. Minor, except to the folks in those other districts. But this is definitely aimed at Disney. Another consideration is that this district was formed for Walt's original concept of EPCOT, which was supposed to be its own charted city (the "c" in EPCOT), the same as Orlando or Tampa. That didn't happen, of course, but the district stayed in operation. Cities in Florida (maybe most other states?) are formed in part as special taxing districts. If the city can't support its district and pay its debts, it runs into the possibility of of being de-chartered by the state and the taxing district dissolved. That's happened to a few Florida towns in the last decade.

They are estimating 200 million in taxes. So yes, but they are screaming its going to be paltry and not enough, even though it's more than what they allot for "taxes" on themselves now to cover the expenses. So it's a lie they are telling.

i have read that this is all just another meh. the counties will set up a special taxing district and everything will go back as it was (minus a few things that Disney never was going to do anyway).

Its about on the level with Chris Christie closing down that toll bridge (or whatever it was that he did to get back at some voters).

Totally disagree. What, 55 years ago, Florida practically gave Disney several square miles of their state, allowed them 5 decades of low tax status and other perks. It was good for Disney and it was good for Florida. I wonder what profit Disney World has accrued over almost 6 decades ($500 Billion?). Not Florida's fault Disney (and many other Corps) went all political and "woke". Once these Corps decided to go down that path and stick their noses into things that shouldn't concern them, they are fair game. The "woke" culture seemed so easy a few years ago. Now they'll see the costs. They need to learn the lesson. STFU, make and present your products and see if the public will buy it. That's it. That's your whole existence- nothing else.

well, there is also that small problem of having union employees that are going on strike because the company they work for haven't taken a stand. Disney was in a no win situation.

Here's a thought. Don't get involved politically on anything. It's like Hollywood. They've survived radio, TV and everything else over the last 100 years. I understand the internet and streaming offers unique challenges along with putting out crappy movies and no creativity anymore. But has anyone there actually considered that the whole industries' purpose is to sell tickets, get people to watch the Oscars. Pretty hard since 2016 (woke) when you are telling half your potential audience that they are idiots, morons and worse. I'm guessing most have forgotten the business model. STFU and put out your product. Consumers will decide.

And the media wonders why Conservatives like myself are totally against (most) Unions. Striving for better wages, better working conditions, better managment/ employee relations? Who can argue with that. Since when did Unions (think the teacher unions) concern themselves with the political bent of their parent companies. And they wonder why they are dying off.

You should probably realize that, Disney, because it hires thousands and thousands of entertainers just to work at the theme parks in Orlando, has an extremely large percentage of gay employees. Its not because they screen out to hire gay employees, its because there are a disproportionately high number of gay people that gravitate to the entertainment jobs.
But, you are probably right. If they would just explain to them how the world works.
