Thought I'd do a photo journal on forging one of my simpler projects from start to finish. This is how I forge out a friedrich's cross hummingbird. Starting out with a bat of 3/4 inch square bar I cut down to 4 inches, making overlapping cuts to 2 1/4 inches down the center at 90 degrees to each other. Open the piece forge then stay with the beak and head, tail, followed by the tail, then the wings. I hammer a bevel into the wings then using a small cross pein hammer in some feathers. I cleaned it up with a 40 grit flap wheel positioned the head and wings then heated some blue glass and melted it in place. Whole project takes about 2 hours.

I just can't stamp the lettering, otherwise that's about a 20 minute rough forge.
I'm in the process of getting some roses started that I've been putting off. I need to make 25 at 5 hours each. Cutting them out takes forever, and I'm working on my oldest daughter's cake cutting swords for her wedding in February. I'll post pictures of whenever they're done. Fantasy inspired messers with about a 15 inch blade, they'll have bloodwood handles and blackened guards.

I'll grab one from harbor freight tonight, maybe a nice sized wrench too and make a bowie. You guys can always go on the twitch stream to watch me make something. Just PM me for the channel name.

Ok, so I ran into a couple challenges while Ib tried this. First challenge was the massive hole that is the guide for the jaw, my plan was to forge weld it all together. It partially worked but the jaws wouldn't weld. I determined it was the type of steel they're made of and had to pivot. I cranked my wire welder up and welded the jaws and partially filled the slide. That worked and I was able to forge a blade out. I knocked the thumb screw out to put in a finger well, drifted it round and theme have it a nice curve on the handle. I am reluctant to try and harden and temper the piece due to the welding but I may go for an edge quench. That would protect the welded section of the blade from added stresses that could cause it to split. I didn't take a bunch of pictures but I got the end result with just a little more work to do to it.

Well, you have to admit. That is fucking cool. I don't know if you can get a workable blade with it, but it looks cool.

Thanks Animal. I have a little more to do to it, but I've got another wrench ready to forge out. I'll use this I've to do a test quench on and break the blade to see what the grain structure looks like.

it would be cool to find one with "Made in the USA" stamped on the part of the handle that you keep. The grind off any other lettering.

if the wrench is long enough, you might have enough steel in the remaining handle to make the blade without having to screw with the end parts.

I would think pawn shops or garage sales would be a source for cheap materials.

They are, but there sent a lot off pawn shops in my town and garage sales aren't common in winter

What's a day, I bought 4000 dollars worth of shop equipment for 1600. A 350 pound anvil, a 98 pound anvil, 2 small bench boxes 2 huge bench vices, a coal forge with a blower, and a huge anvil stand that won't work for me but will make great scrappy for building other stuff. The 350 pound anvil normally sells for 6 to 8 dollars a pounds. This was a fucking deal. Hard part was getting it all home through a little snow and some minor drifting. The working face on the big anvil is 19 inches by 5.5 inches. I now have...7? anvils. 2 of which need major restoration so they really don't count.
1- 66 pound
1- 80 pound
1-98 pound
2 - 125 pounders that need restoration
1 200 pound
1 350 pound.
I think i am developing a problem.

You could always use a few of them to drop on road runners.
I remember seeing a few educational videos on how to do that when I was a kid.

One more idea to add to your "wrench" collection:
