My sister married an Orthodox Jewish fellow (really nice guy), and the first thing his mother did when they got their apartment is set up the kitchen for kosher and treif (non-kosher). It is essentially two separate kitchens as far as possible to keep kosher food away from non-kosher food preparation. Kosher food isn't even supposed to pass over a non-kosher prep area. They later had to divorce due to his mother's serious machinations against their marriage, despite my sister (me and our brother, too) being technically Jewish because of our mother's mother's French Jewish heritage.
