The New York Times has purchased Wordle, the daily word game that has recently taken the internet by storm.

The publication announced the acquisition in a press release on Monday, writing: “As The Times looks to entertain more solvers with puzzles every day — especially during these anxious times — we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve acquired Wordle, the stimulating and wildly popular daily word game that has become a cultural phenomenon. Wordle, which gives players six tries to guess a five-letter mystery word, will join New York Times Games’s portfolio of original, engaging puzzle games that delight and challenge solvers every day.”

just when you think that everything has been invented, something as simple as this comes along.

The thing is that the guy who developed the web code behind Wordle made it open-source. Basically, anyone can grab the source and do whatever they want from it, even make a commercial product from that code, as long as the original developers are properly attributed and the original source code remains free. So Microsoft bought a "fork" of the code and can use it as they want to whatever end, but the developer's project fork will remain available. MS likely also bought the game's name, so other developers of the fork will have to use other names for the game. No big deal, this has all been done before. It's actually the whole point, software (or its code base) wants to be free and available.

Microsoft has released the browser (new) Edge (not the old browser called that), which is based on the open-source browser project called Chromium, owned by Google. That is also the code base to Chrome, and both Chrome and Edge use it along with their own proprietary code to develop their respective browsers. Right now I'm using Chromium/Linux to type this. Another example is Oracle, which bought the main fork of MySQL, once a very popular database project. That belongs to them, although they do release a "free" version, but they also supply paid support. When it was sold to Oracle, an open-source fork of it became MariaDB, and it and MySQL track rather closely, often freely taking code for one to use in the other. Our board site is run using MariaDB, as that's what phpBB recommends, but we could use MySQL or practically any other database system, if our web host supports it.

I figured out that if you type light, modes, and frank, you cover most of the letters. It's not the quickest, but you're almost assured to get it.

I figured out that if you type light, modes, and frank, you cover most of the letters. It's not the quickest, but you're almost assured to get it.

I started with the word fight, then forgot to use the correct but out of place letter, *then* used rather rare words for the third and fourth tries. Sort of over-thinking these words.

Anyone else noticing that the word candidates only have words using five different letters, no repeats? Even for vowels?
