so it sounds like multiple disc spaces are being repaired.if you need to loose weight do it before surgery. successful fusion depends on how stable the spine is at after surgery, weight gain/loss effects the spine after surgery.good luck

My concern is that I have severe osteoporosis. I have trouble growing bone to start with.

bone growing peaks at about 30 yrs old then declines, for everybody. maintaining bone density is more important. loosing belly fat and building abdomen muscles takes pressure off the spine and the pinching of nerves that causes the pain and numbness. there should be some rehab after surgery to help you adapt to the new spine alignment ,dont skip those sessions. also,look at your diet ,good bone mass depends on at least a half ass good diet.
