Because it becomes a comparison of morals. Morally we want to help those that can't help themselves. But also morally I believe taxation is theft. Now you could argue that in some sort of made up hiarchy of morals you would put yours over mine, but there's several reasons I disagree.
1) I believe as long as we pay to the military to act as the world police, as the rest of the world demands us to, we can not afford both. There is a lot of argument on the left that says we shouldn't be, but that's until some poor nation needs us, then no, we are supposed to because again, some morally believe we are obligated to. Here it seems the idea on the left is to wait until it occurs and then go, and it can't work like that. It can for every other country, because we are always ready. If every country had to suddenly get ready to go on a whim, it would be a shit show.
2) this leads to the understanding, the countries we oversee militarily, has less obligation they need to pay into their military. Canada and several European countries are no where near what we are capable of militarily which keeps assholes like Russia and China at bay. Anyone that's wants to deny this that's fine.
3) this allows those countries more leeway to do a more socialized healthcare. And with the amount of people you have relatively speaking, it is more feasible. Though one could argue even with this advantage, it's still not enough in several countries as many want to supplement care with private insurance.
4) this also leads to the idea we also think money is part of a finite pie, and the only way we can get money is to take it from those horrible rich people that are hoarding that finite amount. This is just a failed and horrible understanding of rudimentary economics and specifically capitalism.
5) here is where morally I think my train of thought comes out on top. At this current state, stealing money from the rich at the rate needed to maintain the economy, would destroy America, either through inflation, or the lack of return the rich will continue once their money is gone. We aren't talking about a big portion, to maintain, we would pretty much need to take it all. And destroying the American economy won't hurt just 62 million people, but the entire world. And that is the morally higher stance.
6) stealing is wrong. Wrap it up however you want, but it is. If you want to pay more you can at any time. But no one does. If I suffer we all must suffer is your preferred attitude on this and it's indefensible though you think it's not.

We can not maintain the military and attempt socialized healthcare.
There is more but I think this is enough.

Well the rich have been stealing from us for a long time so I'm not really worried about them.

Do you think free will plays a role in the decisions for people needing jobs, agree to the terms people offering jobs. In other words, choosing to stay at a job that pays shit, is really on the people staying.
