The Last American Public Execution, 1936
In 1936, more than 15,000 people gathered around a scaffold to witness the public hanging of 26-year old Rainey Bethea in Owensboro, Kentucky. The 26-year-old man was onvicted of the rape of a 70-year-old woman named Lischia Edwards.
He confessed to the rape and murder. There were a few mistakes when the state performed the hanging. The public was outraged by the manner, as well. It was followed by a media frenzy. This public execution ended up being the last one on American grounds.
