Regarding the nail gun trick. Years ago we were building an addition to our shop and somehow the builder didn't have a nail gun . I don't know if he never heard of them or what the deal was but a guy at work asked him why the hell don't you have a nail gun. The builder had never even used one. So the next day he comes in with one and we got the airhose set up for him and he's messing around with it just shooting nails out of it. As I walked away from him he shot me in the back with it I was probably 20 feet away ?? I had on a t shirt and then my work shirt that was pretty hefty material and then an insulated flannel shirt so the nail made it thru all my clothing and just poked my skin enough to leave a mark but the nail stayed in the position that it looked like it was in me. The builder instantly shit,and was are you alright,he was worried. He said oh shit please don't tell your dad, I'll take you out drinking tonight and buy all you can drink. In the mean time I was playing it up and acting like I was in pain and I was saying no don't touch it oh jesus. So the builder says it again just don't tell your dad blah blah,I'll buy all you can drink. So then I reached back and removed the nail and told him "we're leaving at 3 and going to the restaurant for starters."

You know that, *I* know that, but how many in the audience knew that? And it was a double distraction trick: he presented the nail strip with missing nails as "evidence" he was using his memory, which led most of that audience in believing the gun was loaded with a similar strip. Not that the tip wasn't being depressed. Along with his banter about memory tricks, and the little performance about forgetting his count. Like a lot of their "tricks" it's more about the total performance than the actual trick itself.

And I'd think you would appreciate them more, they're both big libertarian types, Penn is a bigger (louder?) one than Teller, though.

you can deactivate the switch, or make it where its always stuck open. I'm not defending the trick, I didnt watch it, but your statement is only for movies when the pick up the nail gun in a "natural" setting and just start firing it. Anyone can make a nail gun shoot all the time without pressing it though for a trick.
