One of the facilities I used to supervise had a dedicated area in the back for heat treating the stuff we made. Those were just basic machine parts, dies etc. The furnace was about 50 feet long and it would get hot AF back there. I cant even imagine the size of the furnace required to heat that MFer up to that temperature.
its the raw form that it comes in when you buy it to make other things. The starting point. Obviously, in this case its HUGE. But this is what they start with to melt down to make huge steel things. Probably ship building or something like that.
I bet that was fun to make. The only thing I miss about being a machinist is the satisfaction of taking a raw piece of steel and turning it into a precision part or piece of tooling. That is a shitload of man hours right there and probably some really cool machines involved in that process. Indicating that fucker into position was probably a serious challenge. That's top level skills right there.
