i never played this game, but i watched it enough that it bugs me that the guy doesn't move his "shooter" over to the far right when the things start flying in so he can blast every one of them as they make the turn.
They move too fast. You can only get 2 or 3 of them doing that.
well, it was a few years ago, but i seem to remember guys moving over and getting all (or almost) every single one of them with rapid fire shots as they flew in.

It was like 20 bucks in quarters. Took all day.
Tabletop or stand up? For some reason I was never as good with the stand up. But I ROCKED if I was sitting down!

Had a Ms Pac-Man/Galaga arcade machine in the house for a few years. Played the fuck out of it for months and then finally got bored and stopped playing it. Wound up giving it to my friend who’s a collector. Was fun while it lasted.

I wasted many a precious hour playing Galaga (and the older Galaxian) in the Annex game room at the university in the early 80's, and I got really good at it. Much like PacMan, the game played on a default route, it really wasn't random at the start of a stage until all the lines of ships were in position. So you're right, at the start of every stage, it was imperative to move your ship to one side of the other (not too far to the side but a couple of ship widths away), and start firing away at the line of ships coming from the side or top of the screen while slowing moving. There was a definite way to blast them all out, then you also got bonus points. If you didn't blast them all, you moved over to the other side of the screen to fire at another line. But always be blasting, never stop! It was possible if your aim was good and quick enough, to actually start a level with almost no enemy ships in position. That's how you could rack up the bonus points. Big issue many players had was firing from their own ship fast enough without their arm tensing up. I learned to use my thumb on the fire button while resting the pinkie on the game board while shaking my rest up and down, I could play for an hour without getting tired, most people played with their index or middle finger and would last only a few levels before tiring out.
This player is horrible, or a beginner. Too many times he wasn't firing, and learning to strafe properly around the enemy ships was a big key to getting to the higher stages. I don't know the limit, but I did have the game reset a few times when I guess it felt I was playing too long on one quarter.
