Chicago police questioning ‘persons of interest’ in alleged attack on Jussie Smollett

CHICAGO — Chicago police have identified "persons of interest" in the alleged attack of "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett.

"These individuals are not yet suspects but were in area of concern and are being questioned," Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted.

Chicago police said the two men were picked upon their arrival at O’Hare International Airport Thursday. Both of them are African American, and at least one of them has a connection to the “Empire” actor.

Guglielmi told The Associated Press that the two men are the same people shown in surveillance photos released last month by police. Guglielmi said the men were identified through advanced technology, interviews with Smollett and witnesses, and transportation records.

Around 2 a.m. on Jan. 29, the 36-year-old actor said he was talking to his manager on the phone while walking in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood, when two masked men beat him, subjected him to racist and homophobic insults, threw an “unknown chemical substance” on him and put a thin rope around his neck before fleeing.

After the attack, Smollett returned to his apartment, and his manager called police from there about 40 minutes later, Guglielmi said. When officers arrived, the actor had cuts and scrapes on his face and the rope around his neck that he said had been put there by his assailant, he said. He said he left the rope and clothes on when police arrived "because I wanted them to see."

Smollett later went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after police advised him to do so.

No arrests have been made. Police said they've not found surveillance video that shows the attack but that the investigation is ongoing.

I got the two black dudes, one an extra from the show from an article, then I just ran with it. I should've been a cop.

The police have released them without charge though and smollett has lawyered up..

Bet he will, looks like the investigators may be closing in. Now CPD sources are saying that Smollet hired the two brothers, who were caught as they boarded a plane to leave the country, and they gave it all up in their interviews.

The mail isn't a great source, but they do employ lawyers to at least minimise lawsuits and they don't seem to be hedging anymore. Now looking like I'll finally be getting an avatar.


Edit: then mail was just first in, reputable sources are now reporting Chicago PD sources are now telling them they think Smollett orchestrated it.

I wonder if the brothers will be charged. They did what they were contracted to do, and fessed up at the first opportunity. Could be conspiracy I guess, if they knew the purpose was to make a fake police report, but consent is a defence on mild to moderate assault. I expect they'll plea to a nothing charge in exchange for testimony. Then cash in.
