I was in a friends lodge 2000' up in the mountains above Antigua. It sounded like a bomb went off, we went outside and this was it. Here's a shot showing the distance which was about 15 miles.



The lava, which mostly flowed down the Monnterico side, went for 24 hrs. Locals said it was a burp.

about how many seconds after the "blast" do you think that pic was taken? I mean it has to be pretty damn quick to still be in that pristine shape above the mountain.

I'm surprised at how small the puff of smoke is after that long. Of course I have never in my life seen anything like that. I guess it blows up and then just kind of hangs in the air for a while. I don't know how far away you were, but if you were 20 miles, then it would take the sound nearly 2 minutes just to reach you.
