i don't guess its art, but mine has always been in the architecture in history. the beauty they created by trying to span areas with compounding arches and such. I love the simplicity, practicality, ingenuity and beauty of it.

A lot of those examples (not all) are Muslim creations. A lot in Spain converted to Christian churches.

The best one is in Cordoba. Went there in 2019 and it was stunning

Muslims conquered most of Spain around 7-800 AD. Built that mosque. So about 1,300 years old. When Spain "Reconquista" in the late 1400's, it was converted into a Catholic church- Cordoba.

that last pic is a really good example of the "flying buttress". they had to come up with a way to support the lateral forces on the columns that support a domed or arched span. while the arch is strong, it still exerts outward pressures on the top of the columns and if they are too skinny, then they need some type of lateral support. In comes the idea of the flying buttress.

my undergraduate degree was in construction. the construction department was in the college of architecture at texas a&m. so, my first 2-3 years i had the same classes as all of the architecture students. a lot of studying architectural history. I really thought I might want to be an architect until I found out how fucking artistic those fucking guys are.

the mathematical part i could hang with. it was the abstract artistic skills they had that you just can't fake. its like musical talent. you either have it or you don't. I'm glad I found that engineers aren't just for driving trains. a civil engineer is just an architect with no artistic skills.
