What does it mean to "short" a stock? I don't know anything stocks and shit.
shorting a stock is like selling something that you don't have. Its doing it backwards. Instead of buying 100 shares of XYZ company, you are "selling" 100 shares of XYZ at today's price even though you don't own any. Your brokerage firm will borrow them from someone that does own them. Then, when you are ready you will buy back 100 shares of XYZ and give them back to the person you borrowed them from. And the only thing you get is the difference. Obviously you hoped the price of the stock would go down so that you made a profit. If the price went up then you owe money.
Not very many people do it with stocks and you have to have a broker that knows how to do it. I used to do it all the time with commodity trading. But when you are buying and selling pork bellies, you don't have any in the first place and you don't want any. You are just buying and selling contracts and in the end you own nothing
