It *is* correct: Texas built its own grid for "independence", didn't take the proper actions to condition the grid for the winter (nothing like saving a buck...), saw the grid break down, then they have the gall to think their customers should pay for that kind of service. Is that your "free market" in action? That it happened in other states is quite beside the point. I'll let you come up with your own analogy on the situation.necronomous wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:36 pmThis would be funny if it were correct, and it didn't happen in several other states that are on the national grid.

If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

We will all be fine down here in Texas. Re: Political meme thread for both sides of the spectrum.
i think this whole story might be a bit over blown. The "meme" explosion makes it sound as if a large portion of Texas is paying these kind of prices. And that is simply not true. There is a company in Texas called "Griddy" that offers people to pay wholesale prices for energy. With a warning that the prices are cheaper, but things can happen like they did during the storm and then it is what it is. Griddy has about 29,000 customers in Texas, and they don't report how many of those people pay these "wholesale prices".
Sure, you can find examples of people that make good news stories, but i don't think its any kind of reflection on the overwhelming majority of the people in Texas.
Its basically like people that sign up for ARM home loans and then bitch when interest rates go up. I haven't heard anyone personally say they have had this astronomical price increase happen to them.

no it didn't. Some did. Not the entire state. Rolling black outs in ca are I would say worse, as this is a one time occurrence, and its a freak of nature. Not a common thing that happens and they just ignore it forever. Like CA.QillerDaemon wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 2:40 pmIt *is* correct: Texas built its own grid for "independence", didn't take the proper actions to condition the grid for the winter (nothing like saving a buck...), saw the grid break down, then they have the gall to think their customers should pay for that kind of service. Oh, I'm not worried. Except for my sister and her family who live near Mineola, and a few friends that didn't abandon that dumpster fire of a state, pretty much the rest of Texas can go fuck off. Florida has its charms, one of them being it *ain't* Texas.Animal wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 3:03 pmWe will all be fine down here in Texas. When it happened in San Diego it was across the board because everyone had the same SDGE electric service.Animal wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 3:20 pmi think this whole story might be a bit over blown. I believe that about the Meme of extreme high bill being an anomaly or it would be a much bigger story.

It's not a one off, it happened in 2011. There is no incentive to winterise stuff because the free market doesn't provide one. More profitable to just let everyone and everything be fucked every decade or so and make more profit in the good times. The reason Texas got double fucked by the extreme weather is that it intentionally cut itself off in order to make more profit from the good times and avoid federal regulation that would make it pay for protection againt the rarer bad times, at which point your elected representatives can go to Cancun. It's a policy choice.
