Simple version. When they first get on the well, they remove all the casing. Here they are installing the casing back into the well. Casing is pipe that is about 20 feet long. They connect to each other with threads. They use the chains to rapidly connect or disconnect them. And yes, safety rule #1- watch them fingers around the chain.
Isn't that a drilling rig?CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 6:56 pmSimple version. When they first get on the well, they remove all the casing. It's either a drilling rig or could be a workover rig.rule34 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:01 pmIsn't that a drilling rig?CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 6:56 pmSimple version. The chain turns the pipe, threading them togetherdisco wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:23 pmYeah I watched the video over and over. So the chain just keeps it going straight I guess. What a trip. Incredibly sexy.CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:01 pm Also that video is 1 minute long. Think about doing that physical labor 8-10 hours a day in heat and cold and you get the idea why rig hands past 30 years old are rare.
One I don't see anymore is the rig hand that used to climb to the top of the rig, harness himself in and handle the pipe that was stacked vertically. Extremely dangerous work. I guess they phased that out for the horizontal stacked pipe. Is that what you've seen?Hydroseismic wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:16 pmIt's a dying art form. Countless fingers have been lost to those chains
Been a while since I seen that, maybe it's the newer top drive rigsCentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:39 pmOne I don't see anymore is the rig hand that used to climb to the top of the rig, harness himself in and handle the pipe that was stacked vertically. Here they still have a guy up top with a zip line.CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:39 pmOne I don't see anymore is the rig hand that used to climb to the top of the rig, harness himself in and handle the pipe that was stacked vertically. those pipes are threaded. and the chain is wrapped around so that when the chain is pulled it spins the pipe to thread in the next joint. like winding a string around a top to spin it.disco wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:23 pmYeah I watched the video over and over. Yeah, I just haven't seen it for a few years around here. Also seems like they stopped vertically stacking the pipe in the rack attached to the rig. Not surerule34 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 11:30 pmHere they still have a guy up top with a zip line.CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:39 pmOne I don't see anymore is the rig hand that used to climb to the top of the rig, harness himself in and handle the pipe that was stacked vertically. Actually, the video you showed was probably a low ball workover rig somewhere. The wife beater T-shirt was the clue. Almost every modern rig is automated as much as possible (workers aren't slinging chains or dodging rotating tongs) and require they wear full Nomex suits along with other safety measures.disco wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 1:27 amAnd arms and lives too I imagine.
