the concept of social security is sound. i don't have a problem with that. but like any pension program run by the government, the cash in it turns into a slush fund of ready available money to spend for other things. so that the pension fund itself relies on the government to repay the loans as they are needed AT ZERO INTEREST.
So, instead of running it as it should be run and having the money invested and growing, it is not. so the concept fails. and then creative little things are done each year to lower the amount being taken out.

I would have no problem with it, except you can't opt out and use your money the way you choose and more often would work better and make more money. And the only reason you can't is because as Animal said, it's now a piggy bank that gets used as a threat instead of congressional paychecks or welfare.
