Not a new idea, it can and does actually work. Mostly smaller independent businesses though, I guess people are more likely to pay less at a multi billion dollar chain location.

Panera is known as St Louis Bread Co here because it's the HQ - the original store was very near my old house. It's known for people (sales reps and contract labor) sitting there all day working or having meetings - that's not great if a homeless guy is sitting in the next booth. Plus they weren't supposed to intimidate you if you didn't pay but they'd suggest you work for free in the kitchen. Once everyone figured out they are suggesting homeless people work in the kitchen and there are 10 homeless people sitting in the dining room all day long, it isn't shocking sales plummet.

They figured out that you can't kick out the homeless person for loitering if you advertise they don't have to pay (remember Starbucks in philly?). Thus you get the blue lights in the bathroom so they can't shoot up.

He may not have been doing all that well before hand and this just put the nail in the coffin. Still a pretty dumb move on his part. Nike is such a huge part of that market. He basically cut off his nose to spite his face.
While I personally dont buy Nike anymore if I were a retailer specializing in sporting goods I dont think I'd stop selling it. The market is the market and you gotta give your customers options. The goal is to make money after all. Who gives a fuck if it comes off of Nikes back?
