my son bought an air cannon gizmo that was pretty weird. He shot his cat with it and the cat instantly shit. He didn't shoot it again after that.

Yes, he does/did. But a lot of guitarists play the mandolin as a backup instrument. Jimmy Page was introduced to it by John Paul Jones, and he even had a double headed guitar-mandolin he used on stage. Nancy Wilson of Heart is an excellent player, so is Tommy Shaw of Styx, and Peter Buck of REM. And Chris Cornell. The drummer of The Band Levon Helm could tear up a mandolin. Those are just off the top of my head.

What I'm buying is the bigger brother of the mandolin, the mandola. It's like the viola is to the violin, tuned lower. It has a deeper and mellower sound, not as sharp as the mandolin. It's also a little easier on my aging hands.
