The Mets are going nuts!
They've already grabbed Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar. And now they're going after Scherzer? They're already in luxury tax territory before they even get him!

That's going to be $194 Million for 9 guys!
Francisco Lindor... $34 million per
Robinson Cano... $24 million per
Jacob deGrom... $27.5 million per
Starling Marte... $19.5 million per
Carlos Carrasco... $12 million per
James McCann... $10 million per
Mark Canha... $13.5 million per
Eduardo Escobar... $10 million per
Max Scherzer... $43 million per
The Mets better hope and pray that they don't start taking injuries! This team is going to have ZERO depth!
They'll have about $25 million to fill out 31 roster spots. There's gonna be some serious Moneyball going on!

It's pretty clear now that Cohen don't give a shit about no luxury tax.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:02 pm The Mets better hope and pray that they don't start taking injuries! This team is going to have ZERO depth!

P.S. Maybe they should pay a drug dealer to tempt Cano into cheating again. Three strikes and he's out!
P.P.S. And the Mets are probably going to need the Cano money, when the contract is over, to sign DeGrom to Scherzer money.
P.P.P.S. Though it's likely that the luxury tax limit is going up after this lockout.

Re: Scherzer to Mets?
Bobby Bonilla is 60 years old and the Mets are still paying him $1.2 million a year because of his deferred contact.

Re: Scherzer to Mets?
I enjoy that story every year. I will say though, the Mets weren't completely dumb in that situation. By deferring the money, they were able to invest it and get a return that made it favorable to them. They wouldn't have been able to do that if they paid it all up front.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:54 pm Bobby Bonilla is 60 years old and the Mets are still paying him $1.2 million a year because of his deferred contact.

So 7?Report: The Nats will pay Max Scherzer $15 million a year until 2028
Still making out like a bandit

P.S. No one mentions that when they make fun of the Bonilla deferred money, which actually saved money for the Mutts.

I know you said the deferred money to Bonilla benefits the Mutts.B-Tender wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 9:50 pmAhem...FSchmertz wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 9:44 pmSo 7?Report: The Nats will pay Max Scherzer $15 million a year until 2028

Do you think the $15 mil a year really benefits the Nationals though?
BTW
Assuming Scherzer's deal is three equal payments ($43 million a year), he will make $58 million a year in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
That's because the Nationals owe him $15 million a year for his 2015-2017 seasons.

Re: Scherzer to Mets?
He's making more than SOME TEAMS
Estimated current opening day payrolls, per @baseballpro:
Max Scherzer: $58 million
Seattle Mariners: $57 million
Cleveland Guardians: $46.7 million
Pittsburgh Pirates: $40.2 million
Baltimore Orioles: $37 million
P.S. The Mariners just jumped "Team Scherzer" with a $23 mil a year contract for Robbie Ray

I can't remember how the two are connected, but that Bobby Bonilla payout was somehow tied into the Bernie Madoff scandal.

A sports talk show host that just retired (WFAN), Steve Summers, called the previous Mutts owners "The Wilponzis."Animal wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 10:52 pmthat seems like a much more embarrassing story than paying Bobby Bonilla every year.
That investment money they were supposed to get partly due to the Bonilla deal really didn't work out for them, due to that swindler "Made-Off."
Actually they didn't lose much from the original scam, but they were forced to pay a lot back by the courts. Supposedly the authorities/courts didn't buy the claim from the Wilpon's that "they didn't know the investment was an obvious scam."

Re: Scherzer to Mets?
Just heard on the sports radio this morning that the Dodgers and Yankees may be playing this right.
After the lockout, there's going to be a lot of good players (what he called "mid-tier guys") available real cheap, and they'll be the only teams bidding with money. The way the system works, the mid-tier players get screwed.
